If you are a Warbirds Over Wanaka Club member, don't forget that you must send your entries in by May 19th for the draw to win a flight for two in the Avro Anson Mk.1 during Easter weekend 2018. I've sent my entry in....somebody has got to win that flight, so no point sitting back and thinking you haven't got a chance, because there is a finite number of club members.

Saw that this morning. Even made the news in Australia. Remember seeing the 5 in formation at WOW 98. Really good airshow aircraft - sound and look fantastic. Pity it's just one but it adds to the flavour of another great Kiwi airshow. If you havent ever seen one fly I would recommend it. Like a Gee Bee but scarier.

Plus Jurgis is flying her. His display in an I-16 is unlike any other warbird display I've ever seen. For those keeping score at home, Number 9 was the very first Poli to fly after restoration and the first in New Zealand. It's been my favourite ever since I first saw it in the WOW 1996 book in its original, inaccurate paint scheme. I highly doubt I'll be there but this is very cool news. Well done to everyone involved. The WOW press release: www.warbirdsoverwanaka.com/2018-airshow/news/the-polikarpov-returns/

Is there a video of that display anywhere?

Dave I'm still trying to sort my footage out. Have some downtime next week so I'll make a concerted effort. Have 5 ship and solo displays so as soon as they are converted I will post/send them. Right about the snap roll - 360° in 1.5 seconds. Personal favourite is the Foundacion Infante de Orleans 'Super Mosca'. So few aircraft in Republican or Nationalist schemes. From all accounts a difficult aircraft to fly especially on take off and landing (manual hand retraction of landing gear).

Yes, the official record of the show in which Jurgjs flies one of the I-16s has good coverage, whatever year that was

RNZAF joins 30th CelebrationsWednesday, 13 September 2017, 9:56 am Press Release: Warbirds Over Wanaka Wanaka: The Warbirds Over Wanaka International Airshow will be helped in celebrating its 30th Anniversary by a large presence from the Royal New Zealand Air Force during Easter next year. The Air Force has supported the Wanaka airshow since the beginning and Chief of Air Force, Air Vice-Marshal Tony Davies, is keen to see a number of aircraft on display again in 2018 to help mark this significant milestone. “While aircraft availability and operational requirements will always determine exactly what we can take to any airshow, we are looking to make a special contribution at Wanaka next year as they celebrate 30 years since the very first event.” “We recognise the high esteem the Wanaka airshow is held in by aviation fans both in New Zealand and around the world,” says Air Vice-Marshall Davies. Last year’s Wanaka Airshow saw a large Air Force presence, including displays by a C-130H (NZ) Hercules, as well as NH90 and A109 helicopters. It also included two of the Air Force’s new pilot training aircraft, the T-6C Texan, but in 2018 this will likely be expanded to the recently formed Black Falcons team for a five-ship aerobatic display. As with previous years, the Air Force will also set up a number of ground displays giving members of the public plenty of opportunities to check out aircraft up close, chat to Air Force personnel and find out more about military career opportunities. Warbirds Over Wanaka International Airshow is being held at Wanaka Airport next Easter, March 30, 31 and April 1. Tickets are on sale now through Ticketdirect. Yep I won't forget that lunchtime display he did, I think it was in either 2004 or 2006. Very very cool, reminded me of Mark Hanna actually. The Avalanche is not a big deal in an aeroplane like that, very low speed flick as well. They look a lot more complicated than they are to fly. Really looking forward to his displays next Easter.

Who's going to Wanaka next Easter then?
I am pleased to announce that for the first time since 2006 I hope to actually be there! No more sitting at home waiting for photos to be posted for me! I have secured Air New Zealand tickets as far as Christchurch so far. Now got to sort out getting from Christchurch to Wanaka, and then some accommodation (a place to throw the sleeping bag will do me fine). Options are open.

Who's going to Wanaka next Easter then? ME!!! I didn't make it to Warbirds on Parade in 1988, but I attended the very first Warbirds Over Wanaka in 1990, and I've been to every WOW since. I've also been to every Classic Fighters airshow since the first one in 2001, but I've got to admit I haven't always attended Wings Over Wairarapa....I guess being local means one can take it for granted sometimes.

Dave I am driving from Christchurch on Tuesday the 27th and back on Monday the 2nd and I might have a seat one way or the other. Was offered a position on the committee which I have accepted, hopefully some exciting announcements still to come so you have made the right year for your return.

So you are in a position to put pressure on for the return of Ando as one of the airshow commentators? I've been dropping the hint to Mandy every time I bump into her.
