Photobucket terms and conditions have changed - If you can read the blurb past the huge amount of pop-up ads you will see that to get an account which allows you to link to 3rd party sites like this, you'll now need to spend about $99 per year for the privelige. I decline that, so you will unfortunately be unable to see any of my previously posted pictures.I'll close my photobucket account and move the pic somewhere else (probably Google drive) but I'm not going to re-link all the old posts. Photobucket account will then be closed. Sounds like they are getting a bit greedy...

Oh man, this forum's photo archive value will be totally destroyed.

Last I looked, Google Drive specifically prevents you embedding photos stored there in other locations (like this one). So you can post a link to the photo, but forum users have to click on it (and go to the Google Photos page) to see it. This is a major reason why I still use Flickr - there are few services that let you embed your photos in forum pages. I'm charged USD25/yr by Flickr for unlimited storage, but I don't think that the package I'm on is still available. Feel free to set up your photos on your own web gallery that has the appropriate functionality.

Oh man, this forum's photo archive value will be totally destroyed. I fear so. I see that the only Photobucket account that will allow embedding in the future will cost US$400, about NZ$566. You'd need to be pretty keen to swallow that. Of course, its the usual progression: Someone starts up an internet bright idea - TradeMe, Facebook, Photobucket - and sets it up as 'free'. Over time it becomes a runaway success, and the founder has to raise large sums of money from outside investors to build the infrastructure to cope with demand. Sooner or later, these investors want a return on their money, so either the whole thing is sold to a large commercial company (e.g. TradeMe to Fairfax) or floated off as a Public Company (e.g. Facebook). Then, of course, the accountants move in and every possible dollar is squeezed from those who use the service.

I thought the 'normal' progression was starting a 'free' to the user service, have it benefit from network effects (usefulness increases greatly with additional users) as planned, sell out as planned? Also normal is thousands of unsuccessful attempts to do the same thing.

How long do they think they'll last as a business when everyone abandons them?

I use Photobucket a lot for sharing my model builds on various forum, so this is a really disappointing development. I had been considering a subscription just to get rid of the increasing number of pop-up ads, but now that my pics are disappearing from previous posts I'll just go somewhere else. Have been on there for 12+years.
Anyone see any avatars missing in this very thread? Nice work, Photobucket. In fact I'm now seeing similar images instead of the adverts normally on the forum...

Man that is a p***-off. Photobucket is clunky and often doesn't work properly, and now they expect us to pay for it. Not going to happen.

In fact I'm now seeing similar images instead of the adverts normally on the forum... And they are hosted on a paid account. We are seeing almost the entire photo archive of this forum disappear in one swipe - I have four accounts with them and have not received a single warning, no grace time, nothing. What a bunch of pricks.

Well that's going to muck up a he'll of a lot of sites as well as this one. It's holding customers to ransom.....pay the fee or noone can see your photos. Well they can p... right off. I'll move somewhere else. And I paid for more storage too so they will lose that. Reading about this on other websites there is a feeling they may react to the backlash and give the 3rd party host feature to the lower tier subscribers too. If not there is always this option: "You can download your entire library of images by selecting Library on Photobucket, and there the download album link under actions." Then bye bye photobucket.

Doing the big download straight away will send a message, even if you don't immediately close your account. Closing your account will irreversibly break historical links, which will be annoying if PB cave in a week or two.

As far as alternatives are concerned, there is Imgur for instance which supports the embedding of images on third-party sites. And this 'hack' from a FB post may help..? "To everyone having this issue, this worked for me. Log in and click on the image, then click on the Magnifying glass icon. then back out again. after i did this to my pictures, they appeared again on my account and also on the forums they were linked to (after i reloaded the page). I hope it works for you."

By the way, when you do the big download, are the files organised in any way eg a sub-directory for each PB album?

You can download all of your photos from Photobucket as one action, per baz's post. Hopefully people have their photos somewhere other than PB in any case, but it flags to PB that user's are preparing to close their accounts (or at least copy their public photos somewhere else).
