You just have to love the Boomerang, what a stubby little scrapper! The genius of Mister David (he whose name was not to be mentioned to the Australian public during WW2). David D, not to be confused with Mr David, aircraft designer.

Yeah the story behind her design and manufacture is an interesting read, good link below with her story. www.historynet.com/aussie-battler.htm

Peter, where do you get your pilots from? Nev From 1/32nd, 1/24th and 1/16th pilots, have taken moulds in silocone, then poured them from fibre glass. The Eflite jobs come with a fairly average foam pilot I did some scale work on one of them for my waving P51 pilot, as per Ray Hanna in "Empire of the Sun."

Decided to retire my somewhat beaten up ultra micro Gee Bee, then got to thinking, how about a bit of mix and match, also have a tired Yak 54, use the wings off the Yak in the fusy of the Gee Bee and we get a I16 Rata?! Well sort of, she's been a healthy paddock hence her rather rotund girth. I have been watching some old videos of the real ones and the late and very enthusiastic Tom Middleton referred to these as "Noddy planes" so I'm going with this, she is a cartoon scale version of...... She's ready to fly as is, like to fly my modded planes before the scale details and paint go on in case things don't go well!

Slapped some paint on the chubby little Russian, went for a scheme with some colour for orientation, the camo jobs often get lost down low against greenery. Test flew pre paint, she needed a little lead in the nose, super twitchy in roll and she dives like a brick, interesting as the real one has similar characteristics. Old Wanaka clip they really must have been something to hear and see in person.

Paint and decals on, from what I have found most Ratas did not have top wing stars, may put them for jollies, the decals are from my spares box actually for a Yak 3. Next some weathering, sealer coat, guns, paint the pilot and fly! More on the chubby little Russian below. www.flying-wings.com/i-16-rata

Got some okay shots of my rc scale jobs. Repainted as the locally based 182. Avro Manchester. P47 Thunderbolt. Zero looks more real a little out of focus and in black and white. Last pic pretty close the the full size ex Alpine Fighter Collection Zero replica I snapped a few years back.

Added a pilot to my UM Gee Bee to Rata I16 conversation. Not the best shot but proof she flies. Where she came from, used a Yak 54 wing with a Gee Bee body.

Finally taught myself how to edit and upload clips, this is a 1.1metre span foam Pelican STOL, modded with a spotty paint job and converted her from tricycle gear to a tail dragger.

Thanks Dave down at the local golf course, can be windy at times but a nice spot. Here's another couple, bit of a fan of the Curtiss P40 Kittyhawk, this first one a bit special painted up in the markings of a machine Len Waters flew, the only indiginous Australian to fly combat missions in WW II. These models are small, around 410mmspan, using a geared motor and a 3.7volt battery around the size of a piece of chewing gum. Another P40 along with a rarer type a Fiat G55, she was created by converting a 410mm span Mustang to the Fiat, painted in the markings of the late great Guido Zucoli one of the founders of the warbird scene in Australia. Where the fiat came from.

So decided to mod my 70cm span Turbo Timber into well, I’ll let you work it out? Made the tail section of the fuselage skinnier, rear window with scale stregthening ribs, scratch built fin and rudder, new tailplane in new position. Beefed up the tail wheel for those hard STOL landings, split the control link as the rudder horn is above the tail plane tail wheel below. Yet to fly post mods, been really windy, still needs some more scale details and paint.

A couple of Wilgas, re-paint of an old Hobbyking 85cm span foamie there is actually a real one painted in a similar scheme in Western Australia. Turbo Timber to Turbo Wilga conversion, windows painted, lights sorted still no post mod maiden as weather has been cold, windy and wet! This one was originally all white with orange trim, mods re-paint, ultra micro leading edge slats, larger bush wheels and some fake lights.

Sadly the ultra micro RC warbird scene as far as new ones coming out has pretty much died off by the looks, hopefully a manufacturer will surface again one day? Even when they were putting warbirds out at a semi regular pace we never got any Axis or Brit aircraft. So first up going for something a little different, how about a Movie Messerschmitt? The Hispano Buchon or HA1112 came about when the Spanish acquired a number of 109G airframes, the Germans could not supply Damiliar Benz engines so they were fitted with British Merlin powerplants. [/img] I purchased a couple of 2 cell ultra micro Mustangs a while back when they were on sale, the purpose was always to convert them, one to a Buchon the other is a wait and see? Mods include bubble to razorback canopy, the Buchon is quite a bit slimmer in the rear, so cutting/sanding, scratch built tail surfaces need to be relocated. Scale details, canopy, exhausts, pilot and paint down the track. Bit more on the, sometimes un-loved, Buchon, A number of these had just come out of service at around the time of the filming of the classic late 1960’s British pic the “Battle of Britain.” Flown by Spanish Air Force pilots a number of Buchon stood in for the Luftwaffe against the RAF. This film Is sometimes credited with the beginnings of the Warbird movement as we know It today. Movie Messerschmitts, Buchons also flew in the recent “Dunkirk,” “Memphis Belle,” even stood in as Mustangs in the movie “Patton.” As is obvious I’m a bit of a fan and was lucky to attend the 2018 Flying Legends At Duxford where a lot of the scenes from the “Battle of Britain” was shot. This rare two seater was used for in cockpits shots in the “Battle of Britain.” The number of airworthy Buchons increased in recent years when famed Warbird pilot and collector, “Connie Edwards” sold his collection of six Buchons, a number of which are featured in my photos above, very cool Clip below of Connies barn!

Continue to be impressed with the conversions you do with these models! (And isn't it criminal the cost of models in general now?)
