Sometimes research on the interweb can be a pleasure. Looking at what info I could find for a future RNZAF ground equipment model, it all started with picture off this website. A workshop trailer clearly of US origin so searched website which has pages of US equipment descriptions. Now I have a name and even better a set of dimensions. Another search using the name I found photos of both sides and the inside. Now I just need to break out the drawing board and calculator.

That workshop trailer looks well equipped. I have seen photos of one of them in Europe too

I just lined up the dots and realised that the NZ Army 3 Div Tank Sqn was in Guadacanal in late 1943 while training for Nissan Island landings at the same time as RNZAF Kittyhawk and Hudson Sqns. While I've never seen any info/picture showing they actually met, once I've converted it to the correct Mark for NZ Army service (basically a new turret), the long out of issue Bandai Valentine I acquired from Germany earlier this year will have to visit my layout occasionally for ground/air cooperation duties.

A quick 24 hour conversion of Tamiya GMCs combining closed cab with a steel cargo deck and a set of resin sagged wheels modifying it into this logging truck used by RNZAF sawmilling unit in the Pacific. 01033 by tankienz, on Flickr 01017 by tankienz, on Flickr IMG_3212 by tankienz, on Flickr

Years ago Monogram included a 1/48 Celtrac tractor in their Liberator kitset so I asked on another group if anyone had on to sell. A very generous donor offered to send me one if I just refunded the postage. As you can see it's a very basic kit with lots of work to do especially to daylight the suspension which includes scratch building all the inside wheels and widgets but apparently overall dimensions are OK.

That just reminded my of Monogram kits I have struggled with in the past and made me shudder. I am glad I gave up modelling

I am glad I gave up modelling Yeah I will have to really think about cutting it all out versus scratch building the suspension as I have to make the back set of wheels anyway. The tracks also need slimming down.

Maybe scan the wheel faces and put them into CAD, and build them up in there and then 3D print them out how they should look?

Just when I'd started gathering information to build a Clarktor tractor I discovered Academy make one in 1/48th. I managed to find one in Hong Kong and just missed out on a second bidding on evilbay. So one arrived today with a few bombs, depth charges and torpedos. Unfortunately the tractor isn't exactly the version used by RNZAF in Pacific as it only has single rear wheels but I'm sure I can make two more wheels and widen the rear mudguards to cover the duals.

The rear guards on the Clarktor with dual wheels are wider and a lot thicker.
