Yes John, some look like they've been undercover for a few years.

Thats the sort of ship I imagine you could sail into some big southern ocean storms and feel nice, safe and snug.

Interesting the 2 shades of grey visible at certain angles, a quick touch-up for the ceremony perhaps... or painting over of the Edda Fonn name, but why in a different shade!?! Still curious to find out what the next tranche of mods involves.

What's with the bow-mounted mast right in the helicopter operating area?

What's with the bow-mounted mast right in the helicopter operating area? The forward flag mast on Manawanui will either get lowered (most likely facing forward) or taken down during any flying operations...

From this link (bottom of last page) it looks like it drops down across the pad, where it will be secured in some way. deepoceangroup.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/5016b19e30cd8.pdf

Latest Navy News has what I found in interesting article on plans for 'Hydrographic Evolution' over the next 6 years (to 2025). Obviously Manawanui is a key part of that although the article gives no detail on what the phase 2 mods involve or how they're progressing. The key take-aways are REMUS replacements; Drones for beach reconn; move away from SMB Adventure to craft-agnostic portal sonar devices; and a restructure of the Littoral Warfare Group. Interestingly while SMB Adventure gets mention 2-3 times a year in Navy Today, no mention is ever made of the REA boats Takapau & Tarupunga... did they prove lemons I wonder!?! Manawanui does have a large davit on her port side so wonder what's planned for that. navy.mil.nz/downloads/pdf/navy-today/nt235.pdf

Manawanui maybe looking good from all angles but what is that horrible looking square plate near the waterline? Why is it not the same gray as the rest of the hull? <edit> just noticed there is one one each side

Could be but then again I've seen fishing boats with that on the sides as well...

She's a bit scrappy looking paint-wise for a vessel that's just come out of being alongside for mods & entry to service. Having said that IMHO she'll be totally fit for service.

What ever it is it was the same colour when it was the MV Edda Fonn, so either a sacrificial thing for rubs and bangs, or maybe something techy like radar?

According to Deputy CN, in latest Navy Today magazine, Manawanui is off to RIMPAC. She's in the deep-end then, excuse the rather OTT pun! A damn fine chance to learn what she is really capable of as the clearance diving component of RIMPAC is fairly involved going by press releases of previous years instances.
