Did that Air Freight business stem from the Feildair DC-3's that used to fly Freight across Cook Strait back in the 1980's? The colour scheme looks the same.

It's a little complicated but it's centred around contracts. On the attached site is how it starts with Fieldair. ZK-KFU Convair 580, Constructed as CV 340 (c/n 17), September 1952 for United Airlines. Converted to CV 440 1960, converted to CV 580 in 1966. Operated by Airfreight NZ from April 1995. Destroyed in crash 3rd October 2003, no survivors A friend of mine was a good friend of one of the pilots killed in this crash. Apparently he was an ag pilot with thousands of hours in Fletchers etc. He decided that he had done enough low-level dangerous flying and wanted a change to a more “cushy” job as an airline pilot to take him through to retirement. Ironic and tragic at the same time...

What I noticed, for the first time, was that the tail displays the Fieldair strangled goose, so yes, I would say it definitely stems from Fieldair Freight's DC-3 livery

I'll post some more photos of "KFC-5800" ZK-KFS later today, there are some good ones that Mike has that demonstrate the size difference over the standard CV-580 and different engines/prop combinations. Apparently both 5800 aircraft that were converted have worn the rego C-FKFS over time, this makes the aircraft histories confusing to track, 'KFS is now C-GKFS. Here is a bit of a summary of the Kelowna Flightcraft CV-5800 program, apparently only two airframes were ever produced. www.ruudleeuw.com/cv5800.htmKelowna are the Type Certificate Holder for all of the Convair Prop-liners www.kfaero.ca/maintenance-and-engineering/convair/modification

LOL, I love corporate takeovers/buyouts in aviation, that's how you wind up with such aircraft listings as "Boeing DC-4s" (have seen that at least once )

ZK-KFH: Convair 580, constructed as CV 340 January 1953 for United Airlines (c/n 42) as N73122. Converted to CV 580 in 1967. Converted to freighter by Kelowna Flightcraft 1993. Registered in NZ as ZK-KFH in March 1997 to Airfreight NZ/Fieldair Ltd. On 20th August 2016, Airfreight NZ ceased to operate, ZK-KFH was sold to Air Chatham's Ltd. It was used for a period as a pure freighter during 2017, it has subsequently been subject of parts reclamation by Air Chatham's. Harry, to complete your postings, get in tough with Air Chathams. I'm sure they will give you the dates of the last flights.
ZK-KFH. When taken over by Ai Chathams is was parked on the Island for the fish runs. It is last reported on Flight Aware as flying in July 2018 but I'm sure is was on the Auckland Christchurch night run until Christmas 2018. ZK-CIF. Made it's last flight in March I think but I'm not sure of the date.
Ray.

ZK-KFS photos at NZAA: KFS_1 by Harry Follas, on Flickr Note the rounded Hamilton Standard props (same as the P-3 Orion) rather than the Aeroproducts propellers used on the CV 580. The prop spinner is also larger KFS_A by Harry Follas, on Flickr KFS_3 by Harry Follas, on Flickr You can see in the last photo, the KFC 5800 conversion retained the shorter, original tail of the CV 340/440

OK next in line... ZK-CID CV-580: MSN 385, Convair 440 delivered to Branff International Airways as N3435 December 1956. Converted to CV-580 in January 1967. Converted to Freighter by Kelowna Flightcraft in August 1990. Registered to Air Chathams September 2004. In storage and scavenged for parts from 2007 and eventually scrapped at Palmerston North in January 2014. Air Chathams third Convair 580 purchase (from DHL, Bahrain), A pure freighter ZK-CID was originally purchased for use on Pacific routes from Tonga to Niue with Reef Air. It was intended to convert the aircraft to another combi (similar to CIB). However the service did not eventuate, the combi conversion never took place and the aircraft was only used briefly on freight services to the Chatham Islands. CID spent a considerable time in storage (initially at Mangere and then at Palmerston North), gradually shedding engines and parts to support ZK-CIB. ZK-CIE CV-580: MSN 399, Convair 440 delivered to Union Oil Company of California as N98G in March 1957. Converted to CV-580 in November 1961. Registered ZK-CIE to Air Chathams 13 June 2005. Current with Air Chathams in 2019. Passenger only aircraft, CIE & CIF were both purchased from Alaska based Era Aviation with prospect of services in the Pacific. Both CIE and CIF were operated for periods with Peau Vavau and Chathams Pacific on Tongan and Pacific routes. Both have also provided backup for the Chatham Island Service and CIE will likely be operating the new Norfolk Island service in 2019. Given that ZK-KFS has serial number KFC-004, then logic would say there are at least 4 and there was at least 1 more available after ZK-KFS.

Thanks for the update Scrooge on the CV-5800s, very difficult to find an up to date source on theses aircraft! Well that pretty much does it in terms of the histories of the registered '580s in NZ (I think), thanks for your help too Peter . I have a few photos Mike took of Pionair Australian CV-580s that might be of interest including former KSA which I may add. I'll also take a look through my own collections of photos, I'm sure I have internal shots of 2-3 of the NZ Convairs. If anybody has up to date photos of the Chathams fleet and some latter-day Airfreight NZ aircraft that would be good. Most of my photos are only as late as about 2010
