I don't think they'd FLY it into Omaka somehow! Too big, too heavy and wheel loadings too high for grass operation. I think Craig means to gift it to the islanders as the aircraft and the operation is most relevant to them. Not sure of the final arrangements for the aircraft, but probably not under cover. Perhaps alternatively, somebody should make an offer on CIE before its too late.

incidentally, when Chathams retires CIB it will be the last Convair 580 anywhere in the world capable of flying passenger services.
There is a very interesting clip on Youtube here
Featuring the 2nd to last pax Convair operator Nolinor in Canada which was retired its aircraft in early 2020. These aircraft will quickly fade to memories I'm afraid!

A long shot, but I flicked a message to ‘Bring Our Birds Home’to see if they have any interest to preserve a classic with real NZ history. They could for arguments sake just fly CIE straight to wanaka at the end of its life and could be their first ‘NZ Bird’.

It would be interesting to see the metaphorical rubber hit the road for BOBH. It's a special aircraft, I really hope it finds a home under cover somewhere where its significance to the Chatham Islanders is recognised, but housing an aircraft this size is no small undertaking.

Good old CIB, the Convair with 9 lives. For those that don't know she is a hybrid airframe... Part of her was originally delivered to Philippine Airlines on 9th July, 1953 as Convair 340 MSN 096, She burnt to the ground in a fire in 1955. Convair acquired the remains (wings, landing gear and tailplane) and incorporated them into a new Convair 440 build with non standard MSN 327A. Converted to turbines in the early 1960s, it was involved in an off-runway accident with Republic airlines in 1983. According to the incident report: Republic Airlines Flight 927,carried out a nonprecision instrument approach to runway 23 at Brainerd-Crow Wing County Airport. The airplane touched down about 1,725 feet beyond the threshold of the 6,500-foot runway. The touchdown was made with the right wing down and with the right main gear about 37 feet from the right edge of the 150-foot-wide runway. The airplane continued to the right and the right propeller struck a 2- to 3-foot high snowbank which was located between the right edge of the runway and the runway edge lights. The No. 1 blade of the propeller separated and entered the cabin. The blades tore through the hull, severing the legs of a passenger (who later died). The aircraft was written off by Republic, only to be rebuilt again! It became a combie freight/pax aircraft (converted by Kelowna Flightcraft in 1994). Talking to the Chatham's team, its quite obvious that CIB is their sentimental favourite, How appropriate that she also winds up to be the last pax capable one of her breed in service! FYI everyone thats interested... ZK-CIB will be flying the Chatham Islands route for practically the whole month of July while the ATR ZK-MCO goes in for scheduled maintenance. Get your last chance to fly in a Convair to this magical place before the aircraft is gone forever

I'm glad both parties involved were able to get something sorted regarding CIB preservation...I'm glad to have been able to help facilitate negotiations between All (I've never helped save an aircraft before 😉)

I think Duane found communicating with Brendan not to be the “easiest” However once they started talking to Jason Rhodes they got something good underway.
