They have lots of bits and bobs hanging off them, is the chin piece a camera or radar?

Shall we all dip in and save one of these warbirds? WONZ Herc To The Skies. We could then lease it back to the Govt the next time a 757 breaks down.

“You see we lease it back from the company we sold it to and that way it comes under the monthly current budget, and not the capital account.”

Now we have two aircraft types in the fleet which can be refueled in flight, will the RNZAF train to us this capability or will it be wasted?

Does anyone know what the actual first flight date was? The RNZAF release of 5 April says: And it says that: "Three test flights have taken place over Georgia and Alabama in the past few days, with the first, flying from Dobbins Air Reserve Base in Marietta, Georgia, in the air for over three hours and covering nearly 1000 kilometres." I've seen a list of test flights from Marietta for LAC5978 and the first appears to have been on 28 March, but the first one (and the 4th flight) that's over 3 hours was 4 April at 5hr 19min. What was the first flight date? Also, anyone have the construction numbers for NZ7012-15?

I was sitting at the fence at Warbirds scrolling Facebook and saw a FR24 screenshot showing it flying. I just checked the comments on that Facebook post and the original poster mentioned it flew for over 3 hours. The Warbirds commentary team also made mention of it having flown. There was speculation on Facebook that it had flown earlier than this, but most likely earlier appearances on flight radar were just testing the airframe on the ground.

Thanks - it's all pointing to March 28 US time. I've seen a screenshot from some tracking app and it has an entry with no airport (MGE), but 'FTY', which I take to be a fast taxy, way back on Feb 20. There may have been other such tests that the app didn't pick up.

I understand that this first C-130J is sitting in Georgia ready to come to NZ. The delay may be that we are awaiting a crew to come off of their USAF training program to bring it back or perhaps they want to bring a bunch back collectively. The P8's were crewed by the US Navy and had US registration to get back here but the Hercules have RNZAF numeration which assumes that we will be bringing them back with our own people. Is anyone aware of what is going on?

Is anyone aware of what is going on? Haven't you heard...the order has been cancelled, too expensive! They're going to buy up all the old DC3 around the planet and make a retro look 40sqn... with Toyota Corolla's as the support fleet. Ok take a breath, just kidding ...looking at old media releases & AF mag etc all they say is 'There will be five Hercules in the new fleet, which are on track to start arriving in New Zealand later this year'... I think you might be right about training ongoing. Don't think there's anything to worry about.
