Those carburettor air filters are very similar to those fitted on all later P-40s too (from K model onwards from memory). May have even had the same number of holes (NOT that I'm counting!)

The air filter boxes inside the front cowls were removed from Gloria at some stage. You can see they are missing in the photo's taken in Cathedral square when the cowls are removed. Still had the filter grills on the cowls though.

A rough fitting of the joined section is showing a slightly larger circumference than the fire wall mount points. May have to make a new top centre section slightly less wide to pull everything in.

This should make lining everything up a lot easier.

I first saw these 20 odd years ago when this project was being dreamed up and figured I would get them later. Well, COVID came along, and Major Decals became a casualty. Like most scratch building materials, finding things is half the battle, not too dissimilar to the real restoration process. Luckily these were available and arrived today via a family making an overdue visit back to the U.S. And yes, there are provisions for a future NZ2423.

Trial fitting of cowls. The middle and bottom (left side) sections are OK. The top (right side) section is about 1/2" to high.

A bit hard to see, but the oversized gap can be seen at the back of the engine bay.

Realigning the Duez connectors and trimming back the cowl stiffener strips should have everything back fitting OK.

Cowl bearers taking shape. Plastic air intake scoop being used to shape the single sheet. Having a go at shaping the air intake scoop from a single sheet.

Finally got the top cowl shaped and riveted up. A bit of skin bruising in the shaping process. Next step is to adjust the top of the side panels to match the top panel.

Both side exhaust cowls adjusted to correctly match the top intake cowl.
