After seeing Andrews deer recovery diorama I thought I'd share an idea I have been researching for years with trains, boats, planes and whitebait. The Cascade River in South Westland has an isolated air strip which from the mid 1950s has been used is used to fly whitebite to civilisation. Whitebait harvested on the river is moved on a small hand worked tramway to various parts of the small settlement and onto the the airstrip. There is a bit of the history at www.cascadewhitebait.co.nz/historyVideo at Many years ago I brought a book 'Cascade On The Run' by Neville Peat which got me interested. I contacted the author and he provided a bit more information which allowed me to generate this diagram. Other items that could be added is a crashed Auster J1 Zk-BGT (by bending history a bit).

I have a copy of that book, an interesting read and times. So what scale is this one going to be, 1/48 Whitebait will be a challenge, especially painting the eyes...

Well it needs to have small short take off/landing aircraft and I guess a Fiesler Storch is out. I have two 1/32 Piper Cubs and lots of bits to make the 2ft gauge tramway in the stash but there is also a 1/48 Auster and a few bits to make a similar gauge tramway in 1/48th. New Airfix 1/48 Tiger Moth is due out soon but I wish there was a Fox Moth bigger than 1/72.
Decisions decisions - this is why I've never started before. Indecision rules.

Who makes the 1/32 Piper Cub kit? Is it a Super Cub or regular?

This has to be your project after the Pacific base is done! Or concurrently! I want to see this!

Bert Mercer flew whitebait out of Westland with his Dragonfly and the DH89. Again scale issues with those planes. There is an expensive 1/48 DH89 coming out, but no dragonfly. Minicraft does a 1/48 Supercub, so there is that as an option as well.

Don't forget the 5gallon fuel tins used to freight the whitebait, with added stones...

I looked up the Revell 1/32 Super Cub you mentioned. It looks so cool. I love the version on floats. I was disappointed that Google Image search did not find a single diorama with one of the Super Cubs though, it's crying out for a bush flying diorama.

Darn I knew I shouldn't of posted this thread as its got me thinking about it again. Anyway one decision has been made, it will be 1/48th scale as i was just looking at possible aircraft kits that could be included and noticed a Percival Proctor, 'only 2 kits left in stock'. Oh can't miss out - purchased and hooked. Also noted 1/48 reboxed Piper Super Cub due out in two months. Lying in bed tonight thinking, the Auster in my stash was purchased to be painted in British Army Air Corps colours used in Malayan Emergency and I didn't want to miss that opportunity with this rare kit. Then I realised I can still do that yet also use it in this diorama. A warbirds fly-in to Cascade airstrip! World famous in South Westland, you may of heard of it - WoW..... Warbirds over Whitebait. On that note I'd better stop for tonight.

You know that Kiwi Resins made a very nice 1/48th scale DH89 kit?

After an internet search Kiwi Resins does not appear to exist anymore. Suggestion line sold to Alley Cat Models in UK but nothing on their website or Facebook page (that I can see from brief glance) Any suggestions?

I found a few more photos showing the Cascade airstrip. Also Piper Super Cub added to kit stash and I wonder if a Harvard may have wondered here in the whitebait season to uplift ingrediants for a Wigram officers mess formal dinner.

If you'd like Paul, I could put a plea into the next Sport Flying magazine for photos and memories of the Cascade airstrip, as there are probably readers who've used the strip.

Any progress or update on this project Paul? I never heard anything back from the mention I put into the magazine.
