That was great thanks for posting, not that I have seen many, you don't often see the C130Js with the extra underwing tanks fuel fitted.

The story of two aircraft colliding right over Government House and the PM and Governor General going to the aid of one of the pilots was interesting.

RAAF Centenary Flypast - Canberra Wednesday 31 March 2021. Tranche Three - Current RAAF Aircraft. You will notice the C-130Js missing from this selection. I had to change cameras just as they arrived and flew by, so missed their second appearance for the day. By this stage the sun was getting higher in the sky so a lot of the aircraft as they were getting closer were being lit from above, which meant much of the undersides was in shadow. Great shots Col. The C17s look much lower than the other formations?

mcmaster, I think it's a matter of their size relative to the other types. Similar to when the last QANTAS B747 did its flypast over Canberra, it looked a lot lower than it actually was, largely due to its size. From what I understand, the C-17s were sitting 100ft above height of previous group of aircraft. Now onto the final group of photos from the RAAF Centenary Flypast in Canberra on 31 March 2021. Tranche 4 and the concluding act, formation aerobatic display by the RAAF Roulettes over the central basin of Lake Burley Griffon. As you will see in some of these photos, the smoke now being used by the Roulettes is more persistent than that used previously. With little breeze on the day it hung in the air and in a number of instances they could not be seen or photographed behind their self generated smokescreen. I think they need to wind the smoke back just a notch, or three. Col, At least now I know what it looked like............ Ando, first up, great work on the commentary for the ABC broadcast. Second, there is a guy on YouTube called Avalon Aviation Spotter who has put up a couple of his videos of the Flypast from his perspective. From the views and angles looks like he was somewhere around Regatta Point and so will give a different perspective to what ABC had on their broadcast, and what I got from my location up the airport end of the lake. There are a couple of the other aviation vloggers who made it to Canberra and have also put up their videos of the flypast on YouTube. Also I hope RAAF H&H have sent you a copy of the Aircraft of the Royal Australian Air Force for your library. Everywhere that people thought they would get a good view of the flypast were crowded to capacity and beyond. All the major lookouts were overflowing and some people had camped out from around 8.00AM to be sure of getting a spot. It was interesting to see the lines of cars - with spectators - on the roads around the National Arboretum at the far western end of the flypast area and then all the people scattered around the lake foreshores and the thicker crowds around the more accessible areas such as near National Museum of Australia and the areas between the two bridges. Saw some people up on the roof of the National Library, Questacon and the High Court buildings. Even saw cars stopped along Dairy Flat at the far eastern end of the lake. It drew quite a big crowd and I did see a number of interstate number plates around the main lookouts over the two days 30th and 31st.

Thanks Col, Many thanks for the kind words. I think the commentary could have been a great deal better but have to wait another 100 years for that !....in answer to RAAF H & H......that would be "no"........I shall have a look at the sites you have suggested

Ando, Let me have a chat with someone I know..............I have contacts........... The Aircraft of the Royal Australia Air Force is an imposing work. Just a bit under A4 size, a bit over 4cms thick, over 600 pages, and weighing in at over 2.8 kilos. List of contributors and references is a real who's who. Aircraft of RAAF 1 by Colin Ford, on Flickr The limited edition three volume box set of the RAAF Official Histories published to date is also an epic piece. Done as a special box set with matching slip case and covers, it features high quality printing and binding. For example, particular attention was paid to the reproduction of the photos in all volumes to ensure that they were crisp and clear (a common complaint about the stand alone print run of the third volume when it was first released was that the print quality was poor, with most photos being murky and dark with no detail). It is also a hefty piece - industrial strength book cases required. Box Set 1 by Colin Ford, on Flickr Box Set 2 by Colin Ford, on Flickr Box Set 3 by Colin Ford, on Flickr

I am reliably informed by the ABC TV guys that a "highlights" version of the Queens Colour Parade and Flypast shall be aired on ABC Channel 2 tv at 4pm on ANZAC Day. As they say "Check your local guides for actual times".

I was surprised when I watched the parade that they do the General Present/Royal Present, and then the next call is "Attention!"
When I was in the RNZAF the call was "Shoulder Arms" to replace the rifle on your shoulder, I thought. Am I misremembering, or does the RAAF have slightly different drill calls to us? Or has it evolved over time?

Or has it evolved over time? Dave, was that RNZAF drill with SLR or Steyr-AUG? The drill and commands changed when the RAAF adopted the Steyr-AUG as the moves are quite different due to the rifle drill being with the rifle on its cross-body sling. I noted in the broadcast that the colour guard which came on with the band, like the Federation Guard is using SLRs for their drill. But the close escorts to the colours were carrying Steyr-AUGs. So the drill commands may have been modified to account for the two types of long arm being carried. But then, what would I know. I learnt my drill on the SMLE and then later the SLR.

I learned on the SLR, but I think it was late 1991 or early 1992 that we got the Steyr rifles as their replacement, and I don't recall the drill altering. I do remember hearing that the Army had altered their drill with the Steyrs though. It's so long ago I am doubting my memory, and may well be wrong.

Yes a nice touch that video. Must be cool for the pilots and crews in the larger aircraft to do formation work as it's not something they would do a lot of.

I did not give it justice........... Wot?! Stuff and nonsense. Its a tricky gig with the ABC seeming to take a breakfast TV approach to the flypast, as distinct from say ANZAC day. Probably a tricky thing to package and in end I'm just happy it was televised. But Ando you handled all the left fielders and the rapid fire questions perfectly and set a measured/assured/factual tone to the event... whilst simultaneously having to look around to check what was flying over ...
