Not really - air to air is the same no matter what the subject matter. If you keep in mind the limitations of the subject aircraft and your camera ship then its actually pretty straight forward. The key is to think outside the box when it comes to what images you want to capture.

That's true Ned, but what I meant was, the military hardware and environment captured in your shots, and with which you have had the opportunity to mingle, is a distant and unique universe to that one us GA plodders occupy. Your pics give us a special perspective. Cheers!

Actually shooting GA aircraft is just as much fun or in some cases more so than fast jets because you are very limited on where you can go and what you can do with the fast jets. GA stuff you have way more options.

This one was a flight with the German Air Force back when they had Mig-29s. We took off from Laage in southern Germany in a Tornado and headed up north where the Mig-29s met up with us. Did about 45 mins worth of air to air stuff and then we headed south and they headed north. Fun flight. 45512175844_d0657272ce_b by Ned Dawson, on Flickr

Great catch with the Luftwaffe Mig-29s. They must have had some much fun as Europe’s resident rent a threat. Surprising lack of smoke in those shots.

Sitting on the back ramp of a 36 Sqn Herc when I was doing a shoot with the RAAF. Played around low level in the Blue Mountains which was cool. 33324026818_c4e4382590_o by Ned Dawson, on Flickr

Actually the very very start of it goes back to a ride in a 3 Sqn Sioux for this little army brat when we lived in Waiouru. Jon Marrett was the last of the Army pilots and took me for a ride when I was a young un. That was where it kicked off – got the bug and away it went. Couldn’t do today what we did back then 😊
After doing a bunch of other stuff in life I got my first fast jet shoot with the German Air Force. I had done bunch of stuff here in NZ with Ross McPherson when he owned NZ Wings. I was sitting with him in his office in Otaki one day and we got talking about the fast jets – he said just take the gamble and give it a shot – so I did. Wrote a letter to the PAO of the German Air Force and “embellished” my creds a little LOL. Asked if I could come and fly with one of their Tornado squadrons to do a shoot. I thought the chances were slim and none. Then after a couple of months got a letter from them saying yep access approved. Called Ross and he said what are you waiting for and off I went. Was an amazing flight and the first stage of what has been a lifetime of shooting cool stuff in cool places. Once I got a few shoots under my belt it was easy to get the access and never looked back.
Cameras I currently use – well I have a mix at the moment – got the following:
2 x Canon EOS 1DX MK3s 2 x Canon R5s 1 x Canon R3 coming over from OZ 1 x Canon 300mm 2.8L 1 x Canon 24-70 2.8L 1 x Canon 70-200 2.8L 1 x Canon 11-24
Moved into the Mirrorless arena recently with the R5s and they are a 48 megapixel camera so the quality of the images is stunning. The R3 while not the same 48mp as the R5 is still 28mp and the camera is more like the 1DXMK3 so pretty robust and designed for the outdoors.
Hope that helps.

From a shoot with the US Army in South Korea - the UH60s had the yellow stripes on as they regularly flew along the DMZ between north and south Korea. The stripes were so the South Koreans didnt shoot them down. 33303839358_2463360141_o by Ned Dawson, on Flickr Myself and the late Herman Potgieter during a shoot with a visiting Russian Su35 in South Africa. As others have said really enjoying these, can remember some of them, even found one in my magazine stash, looks like it was taken a few seconds before the above image?

German F4s were always fun to shoot - but a right biatch to shoot from. Not much window space there in the back. 32591723107_2758c8cd99_o by Ned Dawson, on Flickr Couple of Oregon ANG F-16s as we were over the top of Crater Lake, apparently there is an old aircraft in the bottom of this crater lake, too deep to get it out. Aussie 711 by Ned Dawson, on Flickr Here are a couple from a shoot with the 93rd FS (482nd FW) at Homestead AFB in Miami. This was a pretty eventful shoot - we ended up coming back with one less aircraft which ended up at the bottom of the ocean after we had a midair - but thats a whole different story. This was a pretty cool moment - was out at Nellis AFB flying in the back of an F-16 as part of Capstone which is a USAF firepower demo for all the brass. I was shooting all the various aircraft that were part of it including A10s, F-16s, F-15Es B1Bs and then as we were heading back for round two one of the pilots I knew popped up on the radio and said "hey you still got Ned in your pit" - my pilot replied "yup" and 2 mins later he popped up on our right wing. Now this was back when the F117 had only just come into the real world from the dark world so to have it sitting in formation with us was pretty bloody cool. Only captured a few shots before he broke away and did his dry run in. The following day I got to watch the Capstone demo from on the ground in the stands with all the 3 Stars as the guest of General Miller - the Wing Commander of Nellis at the time. Nothing beats sitting in the stand with two A10s coming in either side letting rip with their gattling guns - total Badassery. 44430884100_492a6dbea5_b by Ned Dawson, on Flickr
