Hi Zac, Referring to "a Tauranga-based Yak-52 (profuse apologies to the pilot for neither remembering his name". The Yak-52 was ZK-YIK and was flown by its owner Mike O'Rourke. It took the place of an abandoned three Yak-52 display cancelled because one Yak became unavailable.

Thank you Peter, I'm very grateful! I always feel awful when I forget a pilot's name. He flew a great display! Spoiler alert! The Alvis seemed to start with minimal trouble and was a glorious sight to behold! If I’d been closer I’d have videoed instead. DSC_6271 by Zac Yates, on Flickr DSC_6277 by Zac Yates, on Flickr DSC_6281 by Zac Yates, on Flickr The first display of the second segment was to be a trainer trio showcasing the Polikarpov Po-2, Stearman and Tiger Moth. Tragically for this Polifan the Soviet machine was having some issues so remained tucked away, but the Brit and the Yank went up to give the crowd a comparison of the two types. A few had a choice spot for the coming show – I recognised some faces! DSC_6325 by Zac Yates, on Flickr Due to the weather the Venom’s display was curtailed in the interest of getting home safely, but it’s always a privilege to see this rare jet perform. I hope this gives an idea of the number of folk present - it was wonderful to see so many families and young people! Untitled by Zac Yates, on Flickr The Roaring Forties were excellent as always, kudos to the team (and all the pilots, for that matter) for doing so well in challenging conditions. The display was fantastic! I hope to see more of this pair in the future. DSC_6335 by Zac Yates, on Flickr Then it was time for the final break before the final display…

However the rain finally came down and the decision was made to end the show early. We’d hoped to see the MXS, Super Cub, DR-107 One Design, Kittyhawk and airfield attack but it was simply not to be. The more delicate aircraft were covered and moved inside and the spectators either returned to check out the displays and merchandise in the two hangars or called it a day. DSC_6376 by Zac Yates, on Flickr From my standpoint despite the weather meaning we only experienced two thirds of the programme, I had a fantastic time! I got to see some wonderful aircraft (including many for the first time) and caught up with a great number of friends old and new. Thank you to the volunteers, organisers, maintenance personnel, pilots and aircraft owners for a fantastic day out! Let’s do it again some time! Untitled by Zac Yates, on Flickr

Great choice of pics Zac, gives a good feeling to the day which was a little spoiled by the fickle weather NZ is experiencing at this time. Well done.

Something I’ve wondered for a while is, how come the Air Force don’t put on more of a show at these Ardmore days? They’re the only air shows in the country’s biggest city, so a prime opportunity to drive some recruitment plus raise the RNZAF’s general profile. NH90s, Texans, and some a tactical display by the Herc would be easy and awesome. Anyone have any insight?

The Air Force always has a static display from the recruiters, Schools to Skies, and active aircraft in the static compound. The level of air display depends on the Air Force's aircraft availability, pilot availability, and the restrictions on performing a display within the confines of Ardmore's airspace. For the June Open Day, further displays had been planned but several of their pilots came down with Covid a few days prior. NZ Warbirds has an excellent relationship with the RNZAF and we always talk to them well in advance. There have been NH90 and Texan displays at prior events, and Covid and weather allowing, will hopefully happen again in December.

Just to be clear my post wasn’t meant as a dig, and I’m aware that all those factors will be at play. I’m a regular at these shows so aware of what is shown and that forms the basis of my question which, I guess, is aimed at the RNZAF brass who in my eyes are missing a trick. How likely is an end of year show? I’m dead keen and have been checking the website and here for any announcements as it will be my First Born’s first show and I’m looking forward to carrying on the tradition!
