Can we keep it on aviation... please. Lot of talk about navy and sealanes, but back to military aviation (if there is any in this topic) 🤔 Perhaps the discussion on referrals coming from the courts is about aviation. The only ones I see locked up on planes are the pilots

Got help us. Judith Collins?? Ffs Well it makes sense I guess, Papakura will get even more Defense minister visits than usual (she was apparently a very frequent visitor under the last national government). Well we knows who's budget is going to do well out of this, regardless of the proprietress of it!

She’s got a whole heap of ministerial portfolios; more than any other minister: Attorney-General Minister of Defence Minister for Digitising Government Minister Responsible for the GCSB & SIS Minister for Science & Technology Minister for Space Lead Minister for the March 15 Response

On another note, I do like that there’s a new minister for Space (Industries). They say they’re only interested in advancing the commercial side of things (to increase opportunities for Rocketlab probably) but maybe there’s an opportunity there for the NZDF or MOD to get involved in some sort of collaborative projects to assist capabilities. Who knows.

Who knows. Erm, two things. There are a lot of other space-related industries in New Zealand other than Rocket Lab, such as Dawn Aerospace, and some innovative stuff being done at Auckland University, etc. It has been a big priority of the Ministry of Primary Industries (I think that is the dept) for over a decade. These companies get a lot of govt support and funding because there is a huge return for them. And secondly, NZDF has been involved heavily for a long while. When Rocket Lab was set up the government loaned them around 250 RNZAF technical staff to help get the company going. That was back under the last National government. Over time a lot of them have left the RNZAF and stayed on with the company. Others in the RNZAF are still working with the company. For some reason the RNZAF has never made a big deal about this, but I have heard it from several senior RNZAF personnel. There is basically an RNZAF unit that people get posted in and out of there now, from what I was told. Great skills being learned and shared.

I believe Judith is a supporter of aviation and she spends a bit of time at Ardmore, which her husband's company owns. So her attention may not all be going towards the Army.

Here come the spending cuts! New government has asked the MOD to cut 7.5% and NZDF to cut 6.5% from its expenditures. Source: One News

The RNZAF is a force of only 2300 or so personnel compared to the 4500 when I joined up in the 1980s. Oddly, there are now way more Wing Commanders (in excess of 120) and Group Captains (about 26) with half the force size. Maybe they need to take an inward look at how top heavy the structure has become. Meanwhile the technical "other ranks" are running at very low numbers.

And the government is telling them to cut expenses. Ridiculous. Well to be honest I'm not surprised. There's excited chatter here & on another forum about all this wonderful kit that is likely to come ..plain truth, it ain't! $$ cuts all over meaning once inflation is taken into account there's goning to be a lot of gutting of Govt Depts & finally Willis had admitted it may be in front-line services. B757 will go really quick once, I suspect, a single leased commercial aircraft is sourced. Next will be recruitment & training ...and that will nail the NZDF to the wall! www.newshub.co.nz/home/politics/2024/01/frontline-services-could-face-cutbacks-nicola-willis-acknowledges.htmlHaving just got into the media harping about the closer defence relationship with Oz one has to ask 'what can we actually offer'? Say one thing - do another!
