Does anyone have any plans of the Gloster grebe? I'm putting together a project and having suitable plan pictures would be helpful.

Hi David,
As much as I think it would be incredible to have a flying replica. I have to concede that may be a bridge to far. Mainly because of the lack of a suitable engine. I'm aware of the Gamecock replica in the UK, which was decided upon because they had access to an engine - this is on loan.
What I'm trying to ascertain is, are there plans be they scalable or not, that would make a static replica viable here in NZ. If so, then guage what support their is in the community to build. Pipe dream? Maybe but all ideas have to start somewhere.

How about a replica Gloster Grebe? that would make a fine project, perhaps a homebuilder (the Grebe wasnt very big, and had relatively conventional construction techniques) An Armstrong Siddeney Jaguar might be a bit hard to come by, but an Ivchenko M14P would probably suffice. Both the 626 and Grebe would be ideal replica projects - great idea! Novicepilot, yes I think I was thinking of the Flycatcher, my apologies. Bruce, the Grebe would be a nifty little flyer too, and small so easy to hangar. Also they came in single and dual seaters so if you draw up a good plan other homebuilders may want to buy it and you can recoup your costs. Best of all, they only cost 2500 pounds (or at least they did when Sir Henry Wigram bought the first one for NZ).

So, I've been accumulating different bits an peices relating to the Grebe. I've had to step backwards to go forwards. In that I've a set of SE5A plans, which Folland worked on. I'm yet to roll the SE5A plans out, but my hunch says that the Grebes tail was similar.

Since my last post, I've been chatting with a chap in the UK that has a gloster grebe propeller boss on his wall.
Also managed to track down some more photos through the Airforce museum.
The biggest leap forward for this project would be knowing the whereabouts of an Armstrong Siddeley Jaguar IV rotary engine. Does anyone here have any suggestions on where one would find such an engine?

Perhaps starting with Mr Bridgewater featured on these pages would get more than a foot in the door

Armstrong Siddeley Jaguar IV rotary engine. Of course, a AS Jaguar radial not rotary, but I'm sure you knew that anyway. It's be good to see this progress, few though they were, the Grebes were important in our Air Force's history. Steve.

Stevechch, don't be discouraged by many, many different avenues. It took me years to track down the drawings, (that remained), for the Hawker Demon but the results are evident in the RAAF Museum example and that owned by Jack McDonald

Thanks Jack.
I'm definitely of the mindset that Rome wasn't built in a day.

Good afternoon all,
I'm, almost a 100% certain I'm off to the UK in May for a few months. My intention is to, when I can scout out information on the Gloster Grebe, and visit the Gamecock replica.
Could I kindly ask that if you have suggested a contact, be they here in NZ or overseas, that you pass on my contact details again. My email is justusall@hotmail.com from there I'll forward my cell phone number etc to aid in easier contact. Or if you prefer private message me here and I'll reply.
Thanking you in advance
Stephen
