Has anyone heard from Shorty Mines lately?
He has not been on the forum for a few months which seems unusual. I sent an email to him recently to enquire if he was okay, but I have heard nothing back. Very unlike him. I know he was not too well last summer, he had that nasty accident, etc. I am just hoping he is okay.

Dave, after seeing your post I dropped him a line but I've had no response.

After trying again a couple of times lately to contact Nev, I made a welfare check post today on the RNZAF Members: Past & Present group on Facebook. A member there called Bernadine Rooney made enquiries and sadly she says, "Dunedin RSA Welfare trust confirmed he is in Queen Rose Rest Home." Poor Shorty. I am guessing he no longer has access to the internet. So sad to lose touch with him, he has been one of the most knowledgeable and helpful members of this forum for years and years.

I feel as though I knew Neville at Ohakea in the 1960's, but maybe he was never based there? Oddly, there is no RNZAF Photo Gold training course photo of anyone named Mines. Can you point us to a photo of Shorty, Dave?

Found one on page 55. It didn't really trigger a recognition for me.

Found one on page 55. It didn't really trigger a recognition for me. Those two photos show a very young, almost clean living Shorty.

Was he ever based at Ohakea?

I am uncertain but it is likely he spent some time there as he was on No. 14 Squadron in Singapore.
He spent a fair amount of time at Woodbourne at 1RD, and also was posted to Te Rapa for a few years.

The latest - I messaged Dunedin RSA Support person Niall Shepherd. He replied today with the phone number for the home in Dunedin. I just called the number and the lady who answered said, "Neville is not living here any more."
I asked "Oh, has he gone home?"
She replied, "No, he has gone up to Christchurch."
She gave no further clues. Bugger.
Niall is going to see if he can find out more.

Great news, thanks to Niall Shepherd I have tracked Shorty down. I rang the number that Niall sent me earlier and Shorty answered. We have a good chat and he let me know the situation. He is fine mentally, still pretty sharp and funny. He has had a series of falls, and broken bones, including both elbows. He said he is in the Banbury Park retirement village, Sydenham, Christchurch but it is temporary for the time being while his bones heal. He is hoping to get back online very soon when his son sorts out the connection of the new computer he has bought. I am glad to have made contact with him. Cheers, Dave

Thank you for sharing, Dave. I'm so glad to read this update. I've been rather worried about Shorty's welfare.

I recall Shorty from my days at Ohakea. I recall going with him and several others) to the Matom fire station to dig up numerous Vilderbeast parts , myself Dick Coker , Gary Higgins avd Teas.) We all lived in A Block at that time. We recovered numerous wings with light bomb racks. undercarriage lgs and a P40 tailplane. Shorty organized transport to MOT. They all travelled to Ohakea on the top of Shortys Austin van.
