Thyat second shot of DAK is brilliant Colin. Look slike it was a really nice day in Auckland, I bet they were making the most of it at Ardmore. The Wilga is still one of the ugliest aircraft I have ever seen fly. Were they banner towing today?

Thanks Joe and yes the second one was great as they banked just after the end of the runway so not to out of reach for the 400mm lens. I didn't see PZM do any banner towing but then again I left early afternoon so might have been later? That would have been good to capture.

Wonderful Dakota photos Colin! They're all superb but yes that climb out shot is really nice, and an unusual angle.
I didn't know any Wilgas were still fluying in NZ. Amazing aircraft to watch, we used to have one based at Wigram in 1992 or so, operated by the NZ Police. It could basically hover when pointed into the wind. It gave a great demonstration at one of the base Wings and Wheels airshows, either 1992 or 1993.

Thanks Dave. I caught the Wilga in action this evening doing a few circuits around 6:30ish. Very nimble indeed in the still air with hardly a breeze. Colin PS looks like there were a few of them in NZ? www.kiwiaircraftimages.com/wilga.html

Still three Wilga listed as current in NZ ( NEV / PZL / PZM ). Two crashed (one of these was repatriated to Spain and rebuilt) and one sold abroad.

I think PZL was the one the police leased and based at Wigram. It was used for spotting illicit crops...

This big Russian chopper is at Ardmore and I caught it on a nice sunny summers day that we sometimes have in Auckland. ;D Massive rotors on it and rotor head. Colin

Quite daunting taxiing behind a massive helicopter like that in a little Cessna. Helicopters just don't look right moving about on wheels ;D

I think it is one operated by John Funnell from Taupo, and is used on all manner of heavy lift jobs around the South Pacific (initially logging, but it has also done firefighting in Australia, tsunami relief work in indonesia and building work in the Pacific Islands). It is normally stored at Taupo between jobs. The Hangar at Ardmore that it is sitting outside belongs to Grant Biel, who has worked with John on a number of long range Heli flights (including the famous Campbell island mission in the squirrel) so it may be being prepared for another offshore job. Its either a Mil 8 or Mil 17, its hard to tell exactly which model. its a seriously grunty looking Helicopter!

I always get the impression with Russian helcopters, and some of their aircraft, that they were made in Minsk Tractor Factory No 27, and some commissar came along one day and said "Stop; today we make helicopters".

The mil just flew over heading towards Ardmore. It really does look like a tractor of the sky..
