Back to that Sting - I can attest to its quality as a lovely aircraft to fly. Its very balanced and very light on the controls. After takeoff when the wheels tucked away it really looks and flys like a little fighter plane. Visibility is outstanding and it cruses at around 120kts. There are 4 Stings in the country and am pleased to say that 2 of them are in my hangar. One of these has a turbo charged engine, a glass cockpit, a 3 axis auto pilot and long range tanks. Theoretically he engine will allow it to get to 20,000 without loss of power and the the long range tanks mean it can get to Dunedin without stopping. It must be one of the most highly configured microlights in the world. The are great little planes.

Is that Porter based at Mercer Colin? Do they still have the camouflaged one and a Cessna 185 there too?

Registration shows Vertical Descent Adventures 2005, Glenorchy. I think the camourflaged one has gone overseas from memory and I checked Mike's blog but can't find a mention of either. Not sure about the 185 either but I think it has been at Ardmore on occasions. Where do they fly from at Mercer? Cheers

Earlier today I caught SSS doing a touch and go. After getting home and downloading the photos I heard the sound of a Spitfire outside flying over so Doug must be taking advantage of the fine weather. Nice sound indeed. Colin

There are two strips at Mercer - If you get off the motorway at the new Mercer interchange and head up hill away from the river, you will first find Kelly Field (Russ Wards Strip) down Kelly Rd which is about 3km along on your left. Russ has a collection of Classic American light Aircraft tucked away in his hangar. If you continue further along the "main" road a couple more KMs Jim Lyvers Strip with the Skydive centre is down a road to your right. (signposted)

To my knowledge, at Mercer's skydiving operation they have two 185s (one is DAH, the other is the infamous yellow submarine, the registration of which escapes me at the moment) and a 172, NCA. The camo Porter is JMP which as far as I'm aware is still operating from Mercer. JML is owned by the same company but I have a feeling it normally operates out of somewhere up north, possibly Kerikeri.
