I just scanned this from the Rants and Rave's column of today's New Zealand Herald newspaper:

It's also on the paper's website, with a picture of Harvard 98 taking off. Nice to see

Yes, I saw it at the weekend too! I was at a much less interesting angle.

Is it a little bit bigger than the MX-2?

The MXS-RH is basically a single seat MX2... the -RH refers to the "Rob Holland" modified tail. I think it has more deflection in elevator and rudder as well as larger control surfaces. Along with the single seat layout with the centre of mass further forward than in the MX2 enables the aircraft to tumble easier and longer.

It was a lovely day out at Ardmore today. I managed to get a better shot of the MXS, and saw the amphib DH Beaver for the first time. It sat in a run-up spot for quite a while, and only did a single circuit, so I guess they were working on some issue. Auckland Seaplanes' amphib Beaver by Errol Cavit, on Flickr Off to Oz this week, I should bring back some surprise snaps, fingers crossed.

I was watching them from the AAC balcony and I did enjoy the juxtaposition between MXS taking off and climbing such that he would have easily been at circuit height by the end of the runway, and the Beaver taking off immediately afterwards and climbing such that it disappeared behind the rather low hangar roof towards the end of the runway.

Yes, I was standing downwind of a SUV, and couldn't track it until it was at the far boundry!

Nice to see ZK-BEM out and about - my fingers are firmly crossed she flies on Sunday. I LOVE inline Ryans and I think I've only seen her fly once.

Had a nice morning on the fence, caught various interesting things, photos later. But the real treat was that the modified T-28B Trojan was towed over for compass swings, and then back to it's hangar. Keith Morris(from NZ Civair Blog) and I chatted with Brian Hall (owner), and he told us that it was having an engine run once the oil was warmed. So enjoy!

Album at www.flickr.com/photos/errolgc/albums/72157663765659181A rather warm morning, with 21 active, so heat haze on the ground, and the sun not yet far enough around to strike the nearside of those landing. And I certainly wasn't going to wait until the sun was higher, it was plenty toasty. The heat haze made it tricky, I tell you!
It's not often you end up behind an Auster, but it was too hot to out-run it.
