I finally got to see the Spitfire in the flesh today but it wasn't till I went to take my camera out of its case that I realised it was still at home on the charger - damn this senility I did have my video camera so I've got a couple of minutes of footage of it sitting there looking magnificent. Absolutely stunning aircraft - even more so later when the roar of a Merlin drew me to the window at Warbirds HQ as it took off and, later, the silhouette of those famous elliptical wings against a bright blue sky as it joined for landing. As was pointed out today, the addition of the Spitfire means Ardmore is now home to three airworthy dual seat WW2 fighters. Cheers, Stu.

And if they can get a Corsair from somewhere they can have their own Brietling Fighters team.

I decided that since this aircraft is now well and truly preserved in NZ, at a famous historic NZ airfield and wearing the colour scheme of a historic kiwi airman, I'd better move this excellent thread into the Preserved New Zealand Aviation History section.

I have just discovered that as well as this lovely Spitfire at Ardmore, there is another Spitfire Mk IX preserved in Colin Grey's No. 81 Squadron colours, in fact it's an actual aircraft that he flew in the squadron! And so did Wing Commander Ronald 'Razz' Berry, his boss. It's an actual No. 81 Squadron machine now preserved in Malta www.maltaaviationmuseum.com/spitfire.aspAnd here is a wartime photo of FL-A EN520 upon which the Tr.9 is based www.spitfireperformance.com/81sqdn-spitfire9-fla.jpg

In the "small world" scheme of things, my sister, brother-in-law and their new baby are staying with us for a few days after moving back to NZ from Washington DC. By way of a quick background, my brother-in-law, Robbie McGregor, is ex RNZAF and worked as Director of Procurement at the NZ Embassy in Washington. We were chatting about things aeronautical this morning when he mentioned how he had spent some time working on getting clearance for a two seat Spitfire to be exported to NZ .... sudden intense interest on my behalf. The conversation was only brief as they were about to head out but basically, and as mentioned previously in this thread, it seems that a great deal of bureaucracy was the main stumbling block. Something along the lines of .... "can't export American military hardware sorry" "but it's not American, it's British" "that's not the point" "yes it is" slow grinding of Governmental cogs .... "oh, I guess we'll let it go then"another 10 days or so go by as appropriate paper work is signed in quadruplicate, rubber stamped and filed in the appropriate places and a Spitfire is finally on its way to Ardmore. I'll have to sit down and have a good chat with him about it at some stage in the very near future Cheers, Stu.
