Paul,
On Page 10 of this thread there is a picture of Barrie in his study. Just over his right shoulder is a picture (or painting) of a Devon. Is it a picture or a painting and can you tell what part of the NZ it is flying over?
Thanks

I have kept this picture as I think it is really good. Paul

The group in front of the Harvard. The guy with the moustache in the front row is, I think, Gordon Vette (my cousin)

Was that staunch looking dog the regular unit mascot? Or just a visitor?
It is interesting to see the variation in colours of the uniform jumpers and socks. Did they have tan jumpers and socks as well as blue, or have some just faded. I still can't get my head around the wierd uniform combinations those 1950's-60's guys wore. I note in the DVD we see those Gendarme-style peaked caps that Shorty was asking about too. Ugliest hat in the RNZAF.

These photos are such classics, and not only show what it was like in the RNZAF back in those days, but NZ in general as well. Love that shot at the Bar, and the one of the bloke who looks like he's had a few too many! ;D Has that photo of the two blokes standing next to the Canberra while another four Canberra's fly over head been doctored? It obviously a very staged image, but the four Canberra's look like they've been 'analogue photoshopped' in to me.

Dave,
the reason for the various colours in the Khaki Drill "KD" uniforms is the result of their age. As you washed and wore the uniforms they faded. Additionally as there were several changes of suppliers of the uniforms in the mid 1960s, the exact colour on issue did change. I can remember putting a light bleach into one wash to "lighten" the colour of a new set of KD shirts so that I would appear to be an "old hand" and not a new sprog!!! Also there was a tendency for those who had served in Singapore to wear their tailored KD which was a slightly different hue to the NZ issue. In order to provide some uniformity (no pun intended) on major parades, the Parade orders would often stipulate "Only NZ issue KD to be worn"
Cheers
Paul

And the colour was NEVER called tan!! (and socks, jumpers etc were never blue, just variations of khaki).)

Thanks for that. So was there no blue uniform at all during the KD period? Or was it blue in winter?

Blues in winter, KD Summer (and tropics). Blues were either Battledress (everyday wear) or SD. If wearing battle dress then F/S cap, post war F/S cap was not worn with SDs.Shorts were not part of the blue uniform, only KDs

Not sure myself, but I'm sure Barrie wouldn't have doctored it and I certainly didn't.

I am sure I have seen that Canberra photo elsewhere and it is a genuine flypast set up for the camera in a posed scene I think. If it was doctored it would have been by an official photographer and not Barrie I'd think. I really like it, it makes a great wallpaper for my PC right now.
