This new header is a colourisation I did of a very well known Air Force Museum of New Zealand copyright image taken at the Technical Training School at Rongotai sometime between 1941 and 1944. I have always loved this image, which feaures a Tiger Moth, a Tomtit, two Baffin fuselages, a Vildebeest, an Oxford with its wings on the rack behind it, and a Hind, with lots of trainee tradesmen in overalls, and their instructors in dustcoats. I decided to give it a bit of colour tonight, and I'm reasonably happy with the result so decided it might make a nice header. Here's the full picture.

And a great job you've done, Dave. I love it! It took me aback at first glance.

How many aircraft wings hit those pillars?.

I don't know how often they moved them in and out. I have often wondered is this part of the actual Centennial Buildings at Rongotai which the TTS took over, or were these aircraft kept in the actual RNZAF hangar that was built at Rongotai in about 1938? It's a substantial structure for a temporary exhibit, if it is part of the former.

It would have to be part of the Centennial Buildings wouldn't it ? The description matches and you don't see many hangars with pillars everywhere and wooden floors.
I think we saw mention of the draughty floorboards on another thread a few months back.

Yes you're probably right Kev. It seems the Centennial Buildings were pretty well constructed considering they were meant to be temporary though. I guess the intent would be to recycle the timber. Sadly a lot was lost in the 1946 fire.

rnzaf.proboards.com/thread/21704/rnzaf-station-rongotaiThat would be good native timber as well. Not much cheap pine being used back then. I see I posted the pics less than a year ago, - so much for the good memory ..... I included the links to the sites I was reading from and presumably the draughty floors were mentioned there. Or else I just made it up !

Many of the people I have interviewed who trained there complained of the draughty buildings. No doubt heightened by the fact it was Rongotai, an exceedingly windy spot, which was even windier back then I'm told.

A new header thanks to Errol Cavit. It's fantastic to see three RNZAF Strikemasters all together in the air again, well done to Brett and Charles, and to Paul and Steve and the Pioneer team, for achieving this!

To mark the wonderful achievement of the Mosquito KA114 winning Grand Champion WWII Warbird, and the Golden Wrench, at EAA Airventure airshow at Oshkosh, Wisconsin, I have resurrected this great former header with a photo taken by Colin Hunter.

A tribute to two great New Zealand heroes who passed away in the last few days. Typhoon and Tempest ace Jack Stafford on the left, and Lancaster pilot and Dambuster Les Munro on the right. The modern photo of Jack is from an RNZAF Official photograph.
