This mornings NZ Herald says it was a LAN Chile A340 on take-off for Sydney. Apparently it landed safely in Sydney but with tyre damage.

Well Nev, that fuel tank is now sitting in the steel front portion of the airframe at Dairy Flat and looks pretty good. See page 3 of this thread. Bring back some memories?

Just received from the RAF Museum are 3 manuals on the Baffin. The drawings from Finland have been copied and due to be sent soon. And a special request from Don, he needs a volunteer,to go to Little Pigeon Bay and do another search for items that may be still there. For example, Sir Bruce Stewart's farm dump.

Now an update on Proctors. AQJ is in storage at Ardmore. With regard to ARA, Don was in the process of buying it some time ago (1967). It was with two partners and he only managed to get the wings from one of them. The other burnt the fuselage so Don gave the wings to Phillip Burns to complete AQK which he still has. This Proctor, AQK, is in South Canterbury and is for sale. Someone needs to save it.

Now resident at Dairy Flat, Proctor Mk.5 ZK-AVW has joined the Subritzky collection for eventual restoration. For those that are not aware of this aircrafts history, ZK-AVW was the Proctor flown from the UK as G-AHWW by Arthur Bradshaw in 1949. Any further history would be welcomed on this thread.

It is a pity that these valuable records are held in the Archives and being lost from them. In my opinion they would be better off in the RNZAF Museum, Wigram where they rightfully belong. Archives NZ has so many old records that it is easy to see that keeping an eye on them all is difficult. Wigram has less to worry about and as these records relate to RNZAF history should be with them.

Article in this mornings Herald, Business section. Jetstar considering flying to provincial centres. Maybe the competition is about to happen and fares will go down.

Just imagine, Motat aircraft collection, Subritzky's and Stan Smith's on the North Shore. Warbirds collection and the restorations of Pioneer and Avspecs at Ardmore all crushed and destroyed under a million tons of molten rock. That would be a loss for the whole of NZ.

No. No restoration has begun on the Gordon since it was recovered.

Returning from Hamilton to Auckland yesterday at about 2 PM a Herc went over at about 300 ft. This was just before Rangiriri and it was heading north. I suspect that this is a low-flying route for them as part of their training.

The one on the left in lot 1 (red) could be a Vildebeest/Vincent brake pressure gauge if it goes to 2000 lbs pressure. The one on the right (lot 1), ASI, is the same as the Hawker Hind ASI.

Hi, kiwiwreckdiver and paul. Thanks for your info regarding the Vilde/Vincent prop. I personally have one and I know that Don has at least two. I also know of several around the country so not as rare as most people think. A few RSA's have them as wall mounts.

I know Darren Luff from Wanganui and he told me his father bought an Allison from Southwards Museum a few years back. It has probably taken a back seat now he has the Venom to play with.

Yes it is definitely a cut down RR Kestrel from Dick Shuttleworth. Atlhough having said that I now remember he was also doing a Merlin cut down as well. Dont know if he finished the Merlin 6 before he died.

Peter, Don Subritzky says that it was at Mangere in the light aircraft park that CDC was damaged by the gale, but he can't remember the date.

Talking to Don Subritzky who says, 'kiwiwreckdriver' was at Leigh where it was, but recently seems to have disappeared. He does not think it is the same one as the cockpit windscreen area was still complete. Also, there was another mid-fuselage approximately 10 miles south of Leigh used as a bus stop shelter for the school kids, (Mathesons Bay?). I remember some years back, probably 30 years or more, picking up a Hudson nose that had been used as a bus shelter for kids at Putaruru and bringing it back to Motat for Barrie East. This nose is the one that is now flying on Malcolm Longs Hudson at Temora. So here is an Aussie Hudson flying with a Kiwi nose.

Have just finished watching the film of the Japanese attack on Darwin in 1942. This film should be compulsory watching for all New Zealand politicians. It shows what can happen for an unprepared country when most of its armed forces are overseas fighting far away from its home shores. For those that do not remember, the Australian government decided then to bring its forces back to defend Australia regardless of protests from Britain who wanted them to stay and help win the war in Europe. What it does show is that when you are dependent on another country for your defence you will be second on the priority list. NZ with no defence capability will be reliant on Australia and/or the USA and be second on this priority list. What we need is a fleet of strike aircraft and not a military airline. Will any new Constitution give us the defence capability that we need? I wonder.
