Unlikely to be a Hind, Shorty. The Hinds had only 2 cockpits, pilot, and in the trainer one for the instructor, and in the bomber, one pilot and one for the gunner. No room for a third one at all.

Great to see the photo of the Liberator crashed at Whenuapai, Shorty. Just as a matter of interest the RNZAF accident report lists it as T979 not T379 (No doubt a typing error). On another matter, their was another Liberator EW620 that was damaged in a taxy accident at Whenuapai in January 1945. I dont know if this was repaired or not but their was a wing supposed to be off a Liberator beside the hangar that used to hold all the Motat stuff at Ardmore for years. Anyone know any fate of this particular one.

This was at the site of the current aerodrome at Quarantine Reserve which was opened in November 1938. This information is in the excellent history of Nelson aviation 'Flying Home' by Bob Stevens. I also believe Dragonfly DH90 is correct that the remains of these damaged aircraft were buried under further airfield development.

Hi Dave. Thanks for your welcome. First I must state that I did not work on the Mosquito. When I first joined Motat in the early seventies I worked with the late Barry East on the Ventura until taking on the Hawker Hind rebuild after its recovery from the Tararuas around 1972. I did however negotiate the swapping of Motats Vildebeest to the RNZAF Museum in exchange for them rebuilding the Mosquito wings. I worked on the Hind including the complete rebuild of the rear section, using hand tools as the rollers and dies used today on Dons Hinds were not available then. This rear section is still intact and at Dons place now, stored and not in any other Hind. Work was eventually stopped on the Motat Hind due to lack of space and money for new tubing. Will let you know more in the course of time. Regards, Jim Mungall.

ZK- CMC and ZK-CGN which we also owned were sold to Australia. Millicer Aviation at Sale, just out of Melbourne bought them. Do not know their subsequent fate but the company is part of the Airtourer Assn, Aust. Jim Mungall.

Finally as well as taking the two Sqdn Ldrs to see John Chambers i was also tasked with taking them to look at MOTATS Mossie and right now I can't for the life of me remember the name of the other guy in the photo. Taken about 1982 Hi Shorty. The ones you dont recognise are, Jim Mungall and Peter Dingwall (The Mosquito project leader at the time).
