The longest minimum period of imprisonment on a sentence of life imprisonment is 30 years, currently being served by William Dwane Bell. No person in New Zealand has yet been sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Parole can also be denied. My money is on this guy ending his days in prison.

What a shocking, dreadful, nasty and devastating tragedy to fall on our county, and on the Muslim community.
A huge well done and thank you to the New Zealand Police Force who seem to have made swift arrests and brought protection to communities across the country. Once again, like in 1985 when the French committed an act of terror in New Zealand, our Police Force have proven they are capable of meeting the threat and apprehending the culprits. Let's hope that bastard does not get away with it like the last pricks.

A bit of trivia re the Rainbow Warrior case, the lead female detective (Cushla Williams) was ex RNZAF. She was on my Corporals Qualifying Course.

I don't think the Australian govt will bail him out, unlike the French with their agents, I wonder how much France paid to get their people back. I suppose with this going to court we should be careful with what is said, we can think as much as we like, it's not always wise to say it. isc

I can’t even begin to describe my contempt for this “Australian”. An evil, deranged and cowardly little man. The unspeakable horror he brought those poor Muslim innocents at their Mosques. Sadly, It’s no longer a rare event globally as these animals whip up hate and co-ordinate themselves on the web. But the political discourse has to change too particularly in Australia and in the US it’s not helped by their leader either. I was really impressed with what I saw of the NZ cops. He was still on the move and they acted decisively and got him. When he faced men and women with guns rather than praying women and children, it was over. Whilst part of me would like to see him strapped to a pole at Salt Ash range and filled with 20mm rounds I am happy he faces the full force of NZ law and rots in hell in prison there, where I’m sure the other inmates will “welcome” him.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Life_imprisonment_in_New_ZealandLife imprisonment has been the most severe criminal sentence in New Zealand since the death penalty was abolished in 1989. Offenders sentenced to life imprisonment must serve a minimum of 10 years imprisonment before they are eligible for parole, although the sentencing judge may set a longer minimum period or no minimum period at all (i.e. life without parole). Released offenders remain on parole and are subject to electronic tagging for the rest of their life. ... The longest minimum period of imprisonment on a sentence of life imprisonment is 30 years, currently being served by William Dwane Bell. No person in New Zealand has yet been sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Are you absolutely about released offenders being subject to electronic tagging for the rest of their lives... pretty sure that bit is not correct... would love to be corrected though.

Have heard a suggestion that the cops filmed taking someone (not confirmed who yet) into custody were rural cops from Lincoln (southern outskirts of Chch)...balls of steel!

I hope that from this the gun laws in NZ are altered. The sole purpose of an AR15 is to kill humans. It is not a hunting rifle in any sense of the definition, being of a relatively short range effectiveness. I am also astounded that if you hold and E license then you can legally purchase standard magazines instead of the seven round ones that are sold with the weapon. It has been a tragic wake up call for our gun laws and surveillance activities

The people that want to do this will always find ways of obtaining weapons regardless of the laws. Banning fixes nothing.

But it would still be nice to think that a ban will see a lot less of them out there in our community for idiots to get hold of.

Hi 129 "Banning fixes nothing". Following the Port Arthur massacre in Tasmania the Australian government embarked upon a gun buy-back program. The result was a significant reduction in gun related deaths and murders.

Changing the gun laws will do nothing to prevent this sort of crime, if a criminal wants to do this sort of thing there is always a way to get a firearm, even if you have to make it your self. Someone with a lathe and a few hand tools could soon knock up something similar to a STEN gun. This was not a hold up for cigs in a corner Dairy.
One silly thing they did do was stop, and could restart was the registration of guns, we hadit for over a hundred years, then decided that can't be bothered any more, and took to registering the owners. isc

The people that want to do this will always find ways of obtaining weapons regardless of the laws. Banning fixes nothing. Banning won't stop it, no-one will really dispute that, but it makes management of gun ownership far, far more manageable & takes away all the 'grey' areas such as Police having to prove thru a personality test which will always be fairly easily fudged or worked around by these psychos. It also helps limit the chances of other idiots making a semi their plan B for dealing with shootings in the first place & thereby putting a lid on escalation. Fix it, no...reduce the chances significantly, yes. I'm fairly certain you'll find most mass shooters are licensed... the criminal element who have illegal guns are on the whole (there will be exceptions) not the mass killers. None of this is a black & white science.

Just come through through on the Herald Online feed:
Air New Zealand has confirmed one of its engineers was killed in the shooting at the Deans Ave mosque..
Lilik Abdul Hamid, an aircraft maintenance engineer in Christchurch, was in the mosque at the time of the attacks.
Hamid was married with two children. Air NZ chief executive officer Christopher Luxon says the airline is devastated to lose one of its team.
“Lilik has been a valued part of our engineering team in Christchurch for 16 years, but he first got to know the team even earlier when he worked with our aircraft engineers in a previous role overseas. The friendships he made at that time led him to apply for a role in Air New Zealand and make the move to Christchurch. His loss will be deeply felt by the team.
“Lilik, his wife Nina and their children Zhania and Gerin are well known and loved by our close-knit team of engineers and their families, who are now doing all they can to support the family alongside our leadership team and the airline’s special assistance team. Our thoughts are with them and their family and friends as they come to terms with this terrible loss.
“I would also like to acknowledge the many, many other families, including the families of some of our other team members, who have also lost loved ones in this tragedy, and the wider Muslim and Christchurch communities.
“Like so many others here in New Zealand and around the world I am appalled by Friday’s events. New Zealand is well known internationally for its warmth and acceptance of all people and this attack cuts to the very core of who we are.
“At Air New Zealand we welcome all as friends and will continue to do so.”

I have also been told one of the victims was a pilot. So that is at least two who were in aviation.

I believe that within the penitentiary system he may be dealt a suffering blow from other incarcerated inmates. Lets hope he suffers as there is not enough punishment for planning over 18 months this heinous act of cowardice and brutal aggression where 49 people so far have been slaughtered. Karma will define his fate!! I know this is a radical negative view and as a Christian I should show compassion and forgiveness but I'm sorry to say I cannot fogive this act of terrorism on our peaceful land.

Forgiveness is contingent on repentance in my opinion.
My neighbour was shot in the leg. His father was killed.
Too close to home (but couldn't be farther from it...)
