I don't think that model is 'crappy'. The ladder next to it makes it more interesting.

There's nothing wrong with your model, the gold color is really uniform, the decals make it look really good!!!! Great work ;D Alan

Thanks for the kind comments.
Jon Freeman, the designer of the decals used the official plans for the decal, so missed the extra section of white on the up-wards swoop. I guess you guys will already know that.

Lovely job, that looks great!
I wonder if Glenn is still around the frum - he designed the gold Skyhawk scheme.

Thanks for the kind comments. Jon Freeman, the designer of the decals used the official plans for the decal, so missed the extra section of white on the up-wards swoop. I guess you guys will already know that. Also the stripes tapering at the nose. I wonder what happened between plan and execution! I notice the Mono kit also doesn't have the landing light that is mounted on the starboard undercarriage door, like practically every A-4 kit ever (only the Hase 1/48 gives you one as far as I can tell). Whats up with that? Nice work

Just a few small details on the model. As far as I recall the Gold Hawk only ever flew with the smaller drop tanks at airshows, so there were no large drop tanks in the gold scheme. The standard large ones presumably being unnecessary for it's airshow role. Also the scroll on the model looks quite different to the one on the aircraft. I think also that the inside of the slats was painted black? Small points, but congrats on a nice model. Does the decal sheet also include the large 'RNZAF' for the wing? Yep the 'RNZAF' is included. The small tanks point appears to have eluded the sheet designers (easy enough thing to miss I think), meaning that the tank stripes are sized for the larger tanks. I outfitted mine with the small tanks and had to do some surgery and shaping to get them to fit. Also missed was the slat recesses being black, as you correctly point out. That aside, it is a great sheet, and makes a very different looking T-bird. Jenks is right Silverfox, did something happen to the scroll? I used the 1:72 version of the sheet you used and my scroll looks fine. Thanks for your input Jenks, always good to hear the inside story

Very interesting stuff there Steve. Thanks for posting your memories of the design work of this scheme. And yes it was always very neat to watch experienced S&S workers masking, I never did the painter's course before I got out so didn't learned that skill but I saw it being done several times. For more information on the design of the post by RNZAF armourer Glen Turner who came up with the original design here: rnzaf.proboards43.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=Modelling&thread=3216&page=1

Thanks for the historic painting pics Jenks and information. To my eyes that last pic shows a 300 gallon tank that looks to be of the 'golden' variety. Perhaps these were ferry tanks only and not used in displays or the standby tanks or whatever?

Great (historic) photos Steve. I'm glad they didn't paint the kiwi roundal on that way round! Glen Turner also has a lot more photos of its progress in the paint shop and flying in the RAN scheme with the stripes painted on! Hopefully he will post them (hint hint Glen!)

Fair enough. I guess the zoom lens effect for the rear of the tank, remembering I have not seen these tanks for nigh on 30 years in real life. ;D What is the tank/drum doing by the nosewheel in the above pic?

Brilliant photos Steve, thanks for posting them here.
I am seriously considering putting together a page for my website on this Skyhawk scheme to put all the information and photos in one place, if you and Glen and others will allow it. Would you be happy for me to do that with your words and photos? Full credits will be given.
What a shame that this particular Skyhawk has not survivied to become a museum piece. It was gorgeous in that gold scheme. And so glossy in your shots too.

Have you been too busy to visit this place, Don? 'Withdrawal' must have been difficult! ;D Been on a 2 week "mini Vanguard"! Went to Singapore, Malaysia & Thailand. Got my hands on a Skyhawk in both Singapore and Malaysia too! The Yetti was in Singapore at the same time so we went around all his old haunts at Changi. Found his old MQ and the church he got married in! Surprising how much of that part of Singapore hasn't changed. All the roads are named after RAF bases and aircraft. Even found an Andover Road!
