I thought perhaps the wartime Harvard fans might like to see these two lovely shots from the album of the late Eric Law, a wartime RNZAF pilot originally from Cambridge. This is NZ909 in flight And I guess this might be NZ908, with Eric on the wing

Nice pictures Dave. Very clear .The early harvards do look different to the MK III's.

Hi All Here's an interesting Harvard shot I came across - a 16 Sqn MK II - at Fairhall - looks like in front of the (still existing) Hangar just over the back fence from Longbank at Woodbourne. 16 Sqn of course was a P-40 unit - but does anyone know how many Harvards they had on strength..and did they take them up to the Islands with them ? Rgds John.

No. 16 Squadron didn't take any aircraft with them to the Islands, they left their aircraft at Fairhall and No. 18 Squadron formed there and took them over. Meanwhile No. 16 Squadron took over the aircraft of No. 14 Squadron up at Guadalcanal when 14 Sqn came home I believe.
That's a great photo and a rare site. I think the early P-40 Squadrons each had around four Harvards to use as dual trainers, instrument trainers, hacks etc.

Dave, another role of the Squadron Harvards was conversion training for pilots moving to the P-40. Flapless landings were practiced to simulate the higher landing speeds of the P-40. with and then without an instructor before the student moved onto the P-40s

OK - three more - than some one elses turn.....must be a ton of old Harvard photos out there...older the better. Ohakea - 1976 - Outside 42s hangar - the two FAC Harvards, couple Daks and NZ1076. ..close up on 1076 - was IGGY Wood the boss at the time ? Iggy Wood was instructing at PTS (Wigram) at the time. Sqn Ldr Tom Lambert was about to retire from the RNZAF and held a post in Flying Training Wing HQ at the time. He paid a final "staff visit" to various North Island bases and (if I remember correctly) Tauranga. What better aircraft to use than Harvard 76 complete with Red Checkers cowl (Tom had been a member of Red Checkers on many previous seasons) AND 76 had the smoke generating system installed! What a way to sign off! The side panel with the pilot's name is now in the hands of Iggy Wood. NZ1076 & NZ1037 - recently...what's the funny looking British aircraft in the middle ?..... Rgds Hvd1041
