These are nice pics and I think I may be warming up to the NH90, that big ball on the nose, I'm sure I've read here that a sensor or some such was to go there instead of a ball.
Does anyone know if the RNZAF has any sensors for that space, will be getting any or are they happy with the ball?

MMMM, the PC 21 is a very nice bit of kit, I could be happy in the knowledge that some of my tax money may go towards some of those.

Always thought the F15 would look good in Kiwi colours. My personal view is that F15E would be the best aircraft for a new RNZAF ACF if we get one. I know it's expensive but would be well worh the cost with twice combat radius of F16 and 6,000 kg more ordinance / fuel on hard points. then theres the pure speed !!!!!!!!!!! Not to mention it is the sexiest combat jet on the planet and can do anything better than anything else out there Air to air Air to Ground Air to Sea (The SG version that is) And it can do all of these damn well, it isn't a jack of all trades master of none, the F-15SG is pretty much a master in all of these rolls.

I don't understand these battery issues, one would think Boeing would have experience with aircraft batteries, how can they get this wrong? can't they just use existing batteries from the 777 or the 767? why can't they get something as simple (In regards to their experience in aircraft manufacture to date)right?

I feel like taking a drive to the closest air force base here in NZ to watch our fast jets in action. Oh wait. Damn.

As for the new schemes. My personal view would have been the removal of the Koru and had the ferm, done in silver extended up the tail. I agree with this, that would look awesome, I also would have liked to seen a stylised NZ flag on the fin much like the British airways jets have that coool looking modern airbrushed national flag and the new American Airlines livery as seen Here

I don't see how a black or black and white plane with the fern on it is going to make people want to come to NZ or make people want to do business with NZ.

I've read somewhere that the Germans have a radar on their ships that can see modern stealth (I'll need to find the magazine I found that in).
Also, I know the F-35 has weapons bays and these are a massive reason for it being stealthy, much the same as the F-22, however, on another forum (I forget which one) someone pointed out that for the F-35 to carry anything close to a decent bomb load it will need to be carried on the outside of the jet, under the wings, they reckon that for the F-35 to have anywhere close to an affective combat load out it cannot be stealthy.
I don't know, I just know it is damn ugly and should therefore be cancelled:)

I don't think our current Hercs have been a bad thing for the RNZAF and I'm certain they have served admirably, I am as certain that werre the RNZAF to get the C-130J, especially the stretched version, the C-130J-30 such as the Aussies have, that it would serve the RNZAF very well indeed and would not be a poor choice, if not necessarily the best.

But it also has rough field capability which I think the C17 doesn't have so that would be of interest to the ADF and we would have a niche kit. The C-17 Does have a very good rough field capability, it is well known for it's rough field work as well as the ability to do a pallet air drop, they are also well known for being about US$200 million per plane. I love the C-17 and C-130J combination, I think it would work well. However, I do also think the A400 (Even though it is a scare bus) and a C295 or C-27 combo would be better suited to NZ's requirements.

Are there many 407's here in NZ? Cheers Anthony Unfortunately only one 407 in NZ, HNY, lives in Gisborne and is owned by Gisborne Helicopters Limited.

Mate I am helicopter junky and I have searched far and wide, to date, there are no kitsets of the Bell 407 (My all time favorite) ,Bell 206L, there are rare examples of the AS350, no R44's, H300's some rare examples of the 500 exist.
There is a Bell 206 Jet Ranger kit in 1/32 and I have an old 1/72 Bell 206 and 500.
I would very much love to get my hands on a Bell 407 though and a nice 206L4

Taken from the above, it says that one of the principle tasks for the NZDF to defend New Zealand’s sovereignty. How is the NZDF supposed to do that? Stand on the beach with some rifles and a few motors, some artillery and fire at an invading enemy? Buzz them their ships with our Hercs, show off some daring flying skills with our Airtrainers?
As you said, New Zealanders are so fast to look to Australia for assistance if bad things happen in this region (Who can 100% guarantee that they won't?) but what happens if Aussie says, "Hey, you guys were supposed to help contribute to security and defense in the region, and you haven't been doing that, you can't, now that there is trouble in the region we are going to need all of our resources to defend ourselves, sorry, but we can't help you out, you are on your own."
What if as you mentioned, down the road NZ and Aussie are no longer great mates, they may not become our enemies, but they will not support us at all, then what, we call the USA and tell them they can come help us get rid of that Chinese carrier off our cost (Why should they buy our exports if they can just come take them?) if they promise to leave their nukes at home?
We may not NEED a viable strike force right now, but we MAY need some form of being able to look after ourselves in the event of possible future economic disasters which could force some nations who usually trade with us to just come take from us, we won't be able to hold them off forever, but possibly long enough for the US and Aussie to get geared up to come help us out.
And furthermore, I agree fully with ngatimozart above, self defense for NZ does not necessarily mean defending the country it very well could mean needing to strike out and give someone a bloody nose hundreds of miles away to keep our life line of merchant ships alive.
But we all know that this country's air force will never again be anything more then a humanitarian organization.

Great shots!! But where are the sounds - seems unreal to see the craft doing high speed manoeuvres, hi G's but no sound... Keep it up!! BTW - any vids on YT? I'm sitting here looking at these pics making jet noises in my head, occasionally my wife will ask if I'm okay, seems some of the jet noises escape my imagination. I asked the Avalon people if there will be an official DVD for this years show and they are not doing one, so we have to live with the 15 second clips on You Tube. I'm just hoping they have another airshow at Whenuapai next year and that the Aussies bring over the Super Hornets this time, I have nothing against the legacy Hornets, but I would love to see the big Super Hornets.

Awesome pics mate, thanks for posting.
On the Gripen for NZ note, how awesome would it be if there was an announcement that the RNZAF are getting the Gripen NG form a new ACF? Not only that but the technology transfer in terms of limited parts manufacture and design as well as maintenance proves to be a boom to our economy and has the added advantage of slowing the brain drain due to having a large global company set up shop here and provide work for New Zealanders.
