Geonet has continuous Tsunami sea level data: geonet.org.nz/tsunami/not noticing anything unusual yet - Surely we'd see something from Raoul Island or North cape by now?....

Saw it on tele tonight. If I lived in that neck of the woods it would be the way I would commute to the city. The news item also showed that there are some good display panels showing Hobsonville's RNZAF heritage, so perhaps more people will get an awareness of the significance of the location.

Halifaxes I think - they have the tailplanes mounted higher than the Lancasters.

The big problem with TM is that most of the other facilities in the region are BP, so if people don't have a Z card they can't buy fuel. I got a Shell / Z card when CKE first started flying, but I never used it in the 2 years before it expired, so they didnt renew it for me. If Avgas suppliers in NZ were really wantingto seel their product they would provide EFTPOS / Credit card options like they do in Australia and the US. The Fuel card system is inconvenient an obsolete way of doing business...

I think if the owner(s) of this enigmatic classic twin don't want to draw attention to it just yet, I'm OK with that. I think its great that according to the hints we will be seeing not only the Electra but something else classy and significant in the future (...sometime!). Having endured several years of "Is it flying yet" about my own aircraft, I can entirely understand some wanting to keep things low key. It makes me appreciate the openness of Jerry Yagen and Avspecs over the Mossie rebuild all the more!

just thinking that would look fantastic in polished aluminium I understand that is the plan - look at the rear fuselage! This will hopefully be the next Beautifully restored classic twin to be seen in NZs skies....

I was in Gisborne 5 years or so ago and the DC3 was outside then, and the hangar was open to the elements - Progress has been made getting the stuff indoors and under cover, and that is actually a big thing - even compared to other well known museums around NZ. Yes the aircraft are in poor condition, but they wont be deteriorating as fast now and future generations will have a chance to see them. The big problem is lack of volunteers to do anything with them. Gisborne is a long way from the main centres and the town has had some economic hits which mean that suitably skilled people are leaving the area. KiwiBeavers hints that there may be some clashes within the group which have caused members to leave. I always think this is sad that NZers will leave an organisation when they disagree with the leadership, rather than nominating someone to stand against the disputed leader at the next AGM. If there is the widespread dissatisfaction that they say there is, the new representative will be elected and they'll get the change. Seems people are happier to whinge about something than to commit to do anything about it. So long as the group can continue to occupy the hangar, things will be OK, down the track someone new will come along and revitalise the group and it will be back up and running again. Hopefully it will eventually get to a stage where it will be open at set hours for people to visit without prior arrangement!

so... The fancy geophysical imaging systems that allowed them to say the Spitfires were in "excellent condition" wasnt able to show the modern airport services lines? - the sort of thing that can be detected with a simple hand held device used on most building sites?

I dont think I'll plan any holiday involving domestic travel in Tonga after June.... I'd feel far safer in an ancient Chathams DC3 or Convair than a brand newTongan Government MA60!

the centreline bomb trapeze was to ensure the bomb cleared the prop when released in a near vertical dive... would be pretty embarrassing to destroy your prop exactly when you want to pull out over a hostile target! The Stuka had a similar arrangement.

here is a good site about the various wartime defence installations in Wellington. capitaldefence.orconhosting.net.nz/as far as Wrights Hill goes, the guns werentready to be fired until 1946 and 1947, so although they did shatter windows, it wasnt during the war - as Mumbles has stated. there were plenty of AA positions all over the city, Including Mt Victoria and Brooklands.

The RAF used several captured German transports (Junkers Ju290s or Ju 252s) for moving enemy aircraft from Europe for evaluation immediately postwar. Nothing in the RAF inventory had a suitable rear loading door - the experience with the captured German transports started the allies thinking when it came to designing postwar military airlifters.
