Maybe its a combination of factors: Passengers carried/miles/incidents/fatalities/routes/other stuff? Theres sometimes bias in these lists without hard evidence showing what went into it..

Doubt it, if there's no cooking, singing or pouty heroine addict models in it, we probably won't see it on free-to-air. It would actually fit the format for TVNZ 7 channel. hardly any dribble on there and some programmes that actually inspire you to think! Shame the channel's gonna be scrapped next year I think, leaves us (without Sky) just with the mindless crap the rest of the channels serve us. Be a good excuse for getting a book out for a good read...

What staggers me is the sheer number of medals stolen. Surely someone wouldve noticed? I guess that as he was in a position of responsibility there they could be explained over a period of time. I'd be pretty pissed if they were my old man's medals he'd taken, so I'd say that theres some pretty angry families out there? Total disrespect for these guys really...

You couldn't exactly call that particular operator the safest on the block, 2 fatal accidents on the same type. It's almost like Air Chance errrrr France. Was the other one off Kapiti Island?

That was related to the VC robbery wasn't it? Just realised that The article about that lawyer was in todays Dom Post, never realised that there were TWO thefts! What the hell were those guys thinking?? They must be the only people in NZ less popular than Sonny Bill....

Great shots. But, is that the remains of a crashed Skyhawk in the last photo? Would that have been Scott Armour's one then?

The Army is about to get all new DPM pattern I hear. Made in China Which is a real shame, given that theres a fantastic company right here in NZ ( Swazi in Levin) that makes a superb quality gear, I'd heard that they were in the running to supply the Army but the bean counters went with the cheap crappy stuff.

Afternoon test matches are great. Makes for a real family atmosphere, in comparison to the media-driven boozefest that is the night game. I'd happily fork out the $$$ for the afternoon games if I was that way inclined...

Psst Don't tell anyone but check out the back of the fire station at Ohakea. We nearly scored our own GLR/Rapid refill facility for Unipower operations. Even the then Firemaster told me "You want a bloody swimming pool" I didn't disagree with him Well we wcored a half sized one ;D ;D ;D Well they were incredibly overworked at OH, so I guess they did deserve one! Also just to paraphrase an old saying...If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, quacks like a duck and Chuck Norris says its a chicken...well then, its a chicken.

Fantastic news. They've done us proud. Once again, we show our can-do attitude keeps us up there with the best. Tell me does 5 Sqn still do that international challenge that we used to do previously? Fincastle was it called? Another good example of Kiwis kickin ass...

Using the Editor's name from the Marlborough express web site and a quick check in the whitepages, I can say that the editor also has a firefighting reservoir in his back yard! Great stuff! bet those GCSB chaps have HIS place on frequent watch...just cos he might be a terrorist or something ya know!

Grant, no I don't think that matters. In the RNZAF pools at Wigram and Hobsonville I recall that they had pumps and valves. If the fire siren went you had to immediately get out of the pool because the valve would open and pump start and it would flood the pipe system that went around the base network with water so that hoses could tap into hyrants. The pool at Hobby's sign said the pool would be emptied in 1.5 minutes form memory. Remember the bases used to be remote away from city water supply. So the emergency fire system was not coninuously full and flowing like in the cities. that's how it was explained to us anyway. Maybe some of the woodenheads here can put it better? With areas that have reticulated water supply if the demand from hydrants is too much (ie a decent sized fire) then you can have the option of a secondary supply via large pumps that will bring the pressure/volume up. Nothing worse than a limp hose..... PS The guys at Waihopai wouldve been reading this with great amusement, seeing that they know everything we send via electronic media......conspiracy theorists are welcome to join in at this time

I agree with the sentiments expressed here. So sad when we lose a fellow of this calibre, and a real tragedy for the family. I feel for them. However . . . (I'll probably get abused for saying this): Don't you think that the National Grief is a bit over the top? Here we have someone who willingly and knowingly entered a dangerous profession, where this sort of outcome is likely. All people who enroll in a hazardous activity or profession do so fully aware that the chances of injury or death is somewhat greater than just sitting in an office somewhere. Diving, mountaineering, motor-racing, military service, (yes even flying) all carry an element of risk, and statistically every now and then someone is going to get caught. (End of Rant) Yes some aspects there I can agree on. I think the issue is the uniqueness of the situation, and driving home the fact that our guys have been working in a crappy area where soldiers from other nations have been getting killed on a much more regular basis. We havent really been in a conflict like this for a number of years- G/W 1&2 were'nt really too dangerous for our guys, and I think the NZ public has forgotten what its like to feel the loss of a countryman in combat. The press does also tend to over-sensationalise the SAS (still!). For Gods sake, just let them do their job!! PS, regardless of all the opinions given, the fact is that a family has lost their Dad, and a unit has lost a brother. I'm of a similar age, with kids also similar to his. No family deserves this.

Just found out he's a friend of a friend, and a father of two. Thank goodness they have a great support network back home-pretty much a big family really. Nice to see the thoughts of our forum members are with them.
