nz herald Some capital decisions are likely to be made soon after the Budget, with the Government facing a mid-year deadline to make a call on whether to purchase P-8 Poseidon aircraft to replace the existing P-3 Orions.

Well I think that idea got squashed pretty quickly. Although they use them in Australia for a bit of coastal patrol.

Looks like the RNZAF wont be replacing the Hercs and the P-3s anytime soon. According to what I've read regarding the 2018 Defence Budget, and listening to other experts, there is very little money to be spent on new Capital Expendature over the next four years, but an extra $300m on Operating Costs. Am I wrong, or have my predictions of this merry band of Muppets running your country kicking the can down the road crying poverty, come true? From what I've heard, the Govt is very soon going to announce that "no decision will be made this year regarding the replacement of both fleets, "but we will be re-assessing the decision within the next 2 years". But by then, this current Govt will be gone, and so starts the whole cycle of can kicking again. Looks like there will be more than a few RNZAF pilots hawking their C.Vs to the RAAF over the next few years I think. Sorry Kiwis, but thats the reality, weather you like to hear it or not. just sit back and wait a few weeks. Pretty sure we will know something then.

mmmm P1, C2, C295, Yes that would be almost the same as what I think would be nice to have, but don't think it will happen. I started this thread mentioning airbus military wit A400 then thought they would offer some smaller airlifters such as C295, then they bought out Safe Air which would have made sense to them thinking they had front running, but they have had their maturity problems along with any other new build. C2 I would love as think that would be a better option, alas cannot see govt choosing them as would make us too much an orphan. Same answer as for P1. 90% sure the P8 will be purchased, the transport one is the crystal ball. P3 replacement will be named before Ron Marks extra time to consult is up but production and IOC will not be till 2025.
Transport is required sooner and should be made this year. Not sure if they are still going ahead with the 2018 review of things that National was looking at doing.

Sorry folks, But it sounds like this Govt ( Helen Mk 2 at the helm ), will shelve any plans to replace the C-130s and the P-3 Orions. "Sorry RNZAF, no money, Auckland needs trams"!!.My prediction is that Adern will "delay the project, i.e, kick the can down the road three 3yrs until they are voted out. Apparently Ron Mark and N.Z First are losing the arm wrestle re the Herc and Orion replacement. I emailed Ron Mark re this issue, and his response back was that a decision will be made later this year regarding the replacement of both fleets ". His response was relayed to myself over 6 weeks ago.If these replacement projects do not get the green light, I predict 2 things will happen: 1. N.Z First will pull support from the Govt 2. An exodus of well trained pilots from the RNZAF 1, The replacement aircraft will NOT be shelved. The Govt and other parties will know the state of affairs and would be getting information/advice from the Ministry of Defence on a regular basis. 2, They would have been informed with regard the time restraints in ordering the P8 and quite possibly already had visits from MOD with costs for transport replacement. 3, Lots of people do not like whats happening politically at present, but they will have all the facts and know they have to make a decision soon.

The original time period for replacement for the P3K2's was mid 2020's. Airlift is before it, but only reason they would make a decision soon for P8 if that's the aircraft they wish to purchase, i'm thinking is the time restraints on the production line.
