Thanks - I was picking about $100-150K to overhaul - plus the cost to purchase initially? How much can you puchase a rebuildable one for?
Would be a shame to see Glyn's aircraft go overseas, as its likely to be the only flying example to have an RNZAF connection - no chance of an NZ sydicate getting involved?

Dave - have seen the Ryan, I think - (at Ardmore for the Mosquito airshow?) but this is an exception, rather than the rule - isn't it airworthy as a result of the conditions it was donated to the museum?
As for the trains and vehicles operating - they do this largely on their own grounds - therefore, it is a drawcard to get people through their gates (as was the point of my original post - I'd be surprised if many people are drawn to MoTaT because they see the Ryan flying, or that many people that visit are aware of the Ryan's existance as part of the collection). Aircraft engine runs would be a drawcard as well. However the difference between restoring a/c engines to ground running status, compared to having complete airframes airworthy and flying would be huge, in terms of cost and manpower, and out of the scope of most museums.

A few questions, based on curiousity more than anything else:
1) How is Jerry Yagen going to get his toy home? Obviously too big for a forty foot container.....
2) How much does it cost to purchase and rebuild a merlin to airworthy standards? Obviously, the condition/completeness of the engine when acquired will make a significant difference to this...
3) Has Glyn Powell definately done a deal to finish his aircraft for the UK, or is this rumour? Is it too late for interested parties in NZ to intervene?

I am totally mystified by people who suggest that museums that aren't actually situated on airfields would have any interest in making their exhibits airworthy - apart from the cost involved - once its not on site, its one less exhibit attracting people through the gate....
The people that donated time, money, etc to restoring said aircraft to display standard, would probably not be overly impressed by the fact that it was then effectively"disposed of" to a third party to play with........

Hasn't this (or something similar) been done in the UK? They also did one where they talk some current RAF trainees, and tried to get them to a standard (on simulators) where they could successfully carry out the Dambuster raid - modern training on old technology - quite interesting

I agree with Dave - IF the Spitfire saga comes to anything, they will probably only be reassembled/restored as and when buyers want them. The value is unlikely to change, as P-51 prices are on a par to Spitfires, and there are about 3 times as many of them flying....

I'll believe it when someone produces some evidence - ie current photographs - seeing as every report seems to be different - ie. between a dozen and 124 aircraft, in anywhere up to 5 different sites, some of which might be Hurricanes or Tempests, that were buried (COMPLETE AND CAREFULY PRESERVED) to deny them being used by a unstable regeme - sorry, but if I wanted to ensure them were not used by anyone, I wouldn't leave them where they could be dug up - a big bonfire would of been quicker and more final.....

Thought bucket lists were stuff that had some basis in being achievable - lol - not to be confused with wishlists.... Having been to several airshows abroad (Flying Legends, Biggin Hill, Shuttleworth, RIAT, Reno, etc) I've seen most of what I would like to see - exceptions being the B-29, F-14 and P-38. Would love to see a Tempest V and a DH Hornet, but these are unlikely to ever happen....

I found the hi-viz people trying to move people to be a pita - I have no problem toeing the line (so to speak) if the rules are logical, but letting people move at random along the flightline to and from their vehicles, but not letting them stand with them doesn't make sense - its either a dangerous place to be or its not. Likewise, you were allowed to watch from your cars - provided you keep the windows rolled up. Really? Also, if its dangerous to stand in such and such place, this should also include photographers as well - their hi-viz is going to protect them from a wayward aircraft even less effectively than the safety glass side windows in someones car....

Not so sure about Kermit's - apart from the fact he seems to have alot of aircraft that were airworthy when he aquired them, he seems to rotate which ones he keeps in that state - as far as I can tell, the Sunderland, B-24 and B-26 have not been flown for some time. The Mosquito hasn't flown for about 20 years, and even Kermit says it will need a complete systems overhaul when he eventually moves it to FoF - and thats assuming the glue that holds everything else hasn't delaminated.....

Does anyone have a list of what aircraft TVAL currently own? I know it has made several Albatros (3?) but at least 2 have gone overseas - is the RE8 mentioned staying in NZ?

haha - tomorrow I expect to be: late (always happens when I aren't in charge of the car keys), wet (going by the weather forecast) and grumpy (as a result of at least one of the previous two circumstances).

So - how long to fix/replace an ASI? Can flight testing continue without it?
