Kit manufacturers are mental - after having no 1/32 scale Tempest kits on the market, this year 3 manufacturers are rumoured to be either bringing one out, or have one under development.....

unofficial gossip never hurt anyone - lol Disagree. 1. Inaccurate gossip has plenty of harmful potential. 2. This is the internet and a public forum, so said inaccurate gossip can gain a life and validity totally undeserved once uttered. Gossip all you want, just don't do it on line . Obviously, the "lol" bit after my statement was either not picked up on, or totally misinterpreted.... I do actually realise that gossip can have harmful potential. However, back to my original point - I don't assume someone's private property is open to the public, but the fact that I know where said aircraft is, have spoken to at least one person where it currently resides, and have photos I took at the time, and haven't given any agreement to anyone not to discuss said project based on information I've personally gathered, doesn't make it "gossip", and I don't feel I have an obligation to said owner not to discuss it if I wish. I also find think that this forum is generally a useful place to get the facts out, rather than idle gossip. However, if Dave feels that he has an obligation for whatever reason not to discuss this particular aircraft on his forum, then I respect that, and apologize for the aggravation that a pretty innocent original post seems to have caused some people...

Pity about the Tempest - seems to be the fate of all Tempest projects. Since several where recovered from India(?) in the eighties, none have yet finished their path to airworthy status.....

Sorry - I thought it was a grand slam, but someone in an ealier post called it a tallboy, and I assumed they knew more than me - I'm unsure of its relevence as far as posing it under a Lancaster marked up as a 75 Sqn aircraft. And surely the atomic bombs would be the ultimate in WWII bomb technology?

Classic Flyers in Tauranga has a much bigger population to draw funds and manpower from than Gisborne. I agree with some of the above - it would be nice to see some pristine exhibits in a nice big hangar, but the owners/custodians are under no obligation to do anything at all with them, let alone supply time frames of what they are going to do, and when, which without huge injections of cash and manpower, will resemble nothing but speculation anyway.

Just looking at Errol's pics on the previous page - some of the aircraft are pretty much on the rafters (fletcher) - are there viewing platforms to see these, or do you need binoculars?

Drove to RIAT at Fairford once - from London (not Napier - that would just be silly) - last few miles from the motorway were down very narrow country roads, and the traffic still flowed better than at Ohakea. Having more than one gate open into the car parks probably helped. Viewing the static park (about 250 aircraft) after the flying displays were over meant the car parks were nearly empty when it was time to leave. Also driven to the Biggin Hill airshow, Reno air races, and Flying Legends and not had a problem with getting in/out....

There are currently 2 Beaufighters being returned to airworthiness in the UK - The Fighter Collection has one, can't remember the other - maybe SkySport? ..and as for the Hornet - even if Glyn was keen, the entire process would need to be started from scratch again (apart from availability of engines being an issue) - and he'd be the oldest man alive by the time the first one was finished......

I was wondering how long it would take before someone got upset about this, or whether the normal course of events take place - ie, do nothing until its disappeared overseas, then bitch about the loss of yet another part of the RNZAF's history overseas, followed by threads full of fantasy and if only's......
OK rant finished - thinking positive..... It seems likely that the reason that Glyn has chosen to sell his aircraft is that without funding for the thousands of hours of labour required to finish this project, his small team aren't likely to finish it before he is too old to fly it. From what I've read, the deal to sell NZ2308 to the UK is still in the negiation stage. This probably means Glyn may be open to other options - ie some sort of sydicate could be set up to keep it here. For example, Peter Jackson has about 80 staff with experience in wooden aeroplanes, the Croydon(?) company that builds de Havillands in the SI could have an interest, so a sydicate that involves one or the other (or both) may provide a labour option - Brendan Deere might like to provide hangar space with his Spit and Avenger, and Glyn might like to fly it, if no one else wants to.
Obviously, this is the only Mosquito with a direct RNZAF link that is ever likely to fly, and once it disappears offshore, its not likely even to retain its NZ identity - it'll be another aircraft painted in generic grey/green paint representing some RAF sqn..... I think the UK should have a Mosquito - just not this one......

While I can see how you could make top and bottom wings for the same side the same, I'm curious how you make a left wing interchangeable with a right wing - wouldn't swopping sides involve turning it upside down, which would cause interesting issues with the aerofoil shape of the wing?

well that would explain the world shortage of Mosquito escape hatches..... Seriously though, until the AF museum have a Mosquito of their own on display, they would probably be better to keep any of the parts they have - any spares they have could be used as trade items when it comes to restoration time. Also, if the stuff has been donated by individuals, they probably have some obligation to retain it......

Read the article - more than one error in it....
As for spares held by the RNZAF - take a step back, stop thinking of major assemblies and think - one Merlin spark plug would be a Mosquito spare, two would be spares - so technicaly it wouldn't take much for that statement to be true, without the inference that someone is depriving the warbirds industry of piles of parrts valuable to other restorations.....
