A Google search produced the following.
Upon investigation, by the NZCAD, it was determined, and much to the surprise/concern of all parties, that signals emanating from the Newlands beacon, were in fact being ghosted/transmitted by power cables for a considerable distance north of the beacons location .... therefore resulting in false navigation fixes/indications aboard aircraft approaching Wellington from the north and using this particular navigational aid .... as was then confirmed to have been the case in this particular DC-8 incident.

My "Wings, " presented mid 1958 have the inner section of the Crown in red. Others acquired later for my flying suit were without colour but in black.

Ian Patterson joined TEAL ( then AirNZ ) post WW 2, unsure the Flying Boats he operated but he certainly Captained the Lockheed Electra and the Douglas DC 8. During the latter periods was still a resident of St Heliers.

I am posting this on behalf of UK aviation journalist Peter Cooper who is working on a project about Operation Deep Freeze. "I would be interested in photos from the early “Deep Freeze” days both at Wigram and Harewood of the VX-6 aircraft during the 1950’/1960’s. Any decent C-121 Super Constellations, C-124 Globemasters, R4D Skytrains, R5D Skymaster, P2V Neptunes and the UF-1 Albatross. I have found some but the more the merrier to choose from."Can anyone please help Peter out? His email is pdcooper22@gmail.com
Thanks. FYI. I have replied directly to Peter and posted my collection photographed at Wigram and Christchurch from the periods 1957 - 58 and 1960 - 61. Included were depictions of all the above aircraft types with the exception of the Albatross. Also included were some helicopters, these latter machines all at Wigram during the summer of 1957 -58. My posts to him 03 March.

Prior to the weapons course commencement I referred to as being in May 1958, the pupils were shown the minor ridge that Bruce McGill dug his wing into. A timely warning I recall.

Re Birdlings Flat, the last Wings Air Weapons course was during the first week of May 1958. Rocket firing also carried out with a 35 degree dive angle intended. Also air to air; air to ground; low level bombing. The instructors also flew mainly low level bombing. (I had an inert rocket and this presented to " Classic Flyers Tauranga" approx 7 years back. This rocket had dropped off the rear of a Bedford truck during this period and rescued by an Engineer.)

From earlier, "Any answers out there?" The depiction of 4 pilots on the wing, the pilot at right is C.(Colin ) E. Palmer . In the mid - late 1950's a school teacher at Hunterville. In the latter stages of his life was in the vicinity of Mangawhai. I made the initial ID and asked my brother ( who was taught by Colin ) whether he knew who was in the photograph, so without prompting he stated as I did Colin Palmer, so I'll call that a positive ID.

Leslie (Les) Simpson. Served in the RNZAF for 10 years, initially as an aircraft mechanic then remustered as a pilot graduating to command on the Sunderland. The last year as flight instructor at the maritime conversion unit at Hobsonville. Joined TEAL 1958, flying the Solent, then captained the Electra, DC 8, DC 10 and 747 -200. Certainly the last Solent flying boat First Officer from the TEAL era. Was Superintendent of Training when the 747 introduced. Retired from AirNZ in 1984 at the then mandatory retirement age of 55, flew then for Singapore Airlines for five years.

Re the last RNZAF Mustang flight by A.J McLeod. Alistair initially to Bay of Plenty Airways, mostly flew the lovely sounding Aero Commander. Then to Mt Cook, last heard of in the Christchurch area.

The DC 10 was not 'sent out to search" for the Cessna but was on a scheduled flight. Indeed the Arthur Dovey referred to is (was?) the operator of the Yak. There's another, Malcolm (Mal ) Forsyth a former Navigator also on the crew.

There was a Jack O'Dowd as an aerodromes expert in what was the Air Transport Division, MOT 1990 - 92. Thanks. Is it what you remember or did you find it from a source? Is there any chance to track this info? I was there during that period and recall him well.

Hi Avenger, Yes, it was along time ago, memories are now very hazy and it may well have been the 1955 Air Force day which I attended. All I recall about the event I attended was my father and uncle's astonishment at the P51's solo display in which it aileron rolled along the runway at very low altitude.
If I recall correctly Mike Daniel was the pilot who performed the 8 point hesitation roll along the runway.

Have an idea I was there as a nipper. Mike Daniell performed an aerobatic routine in a P51 but I remember nothing of it. I had posted the 1955 Air Force Day program at Ohakea to photobucket, so that's lost. But do recall that Mike Daniell did indeed display the Mustang but unsure which year, the other P 51 display pilot Clarrie Berryman.
