From Herald, same article. It has flown some interesting sorties in its time, and the final trip will certainly not be a dull one for the last complete Avenger torpedo bomber in NZ. The folding wing aircraft has been a display piece at Hamilton Te Rapa air force base since retiring from active duties in 1959. Now someone has decided to give it a place of honour at the RNZAF historical centre in Wigram, Christchurch. It is perhaps sad that after such a colourful career including WW 2 action in the Pacific theatre with 30 and 31 Squadrons and duty as a target-towing plane the last trip for the Avenger bomber is not to be by air. The plane was brought to Auckland by transporter yesterday and from Jellicoe Wharf was loaded into the frigate Waikato. Her retirement cruise as a guest of the navy will see the Avenger delivered to Christchurch next week. At Wigram she will be restored to display condition.

From 'By Such Deeds ' by Group Captain C.M.Hanson OBE RNZAF (Rtd), 25 Feb. 1990, in London. This must have been ex the then Dominion newspaper, again date uncertain but a reasonable assumption is 1992.

The Canberras at Timaru were actually RAF aircraft on hire to the RNZAF - WF915 and WJ605.Note the second Canberra is ???15.The silver aircraft unkown to me, moderately sure this at Ohakea. I do have a close up of the nose of one of the multi coloured Canberras but no I/D visible, decided not to post on this thread.

HMS Albion was in Auckland during 1959 , as their helicopters did a flypast over Auckland and the huge clattering caused our classes to stop . The ship was open to the public ,and I spent an afternoon aboard ( no camera in those days) . I think that Whenuapai hosted some of the aircraft. 1959 fits with the period of the original post photographs, (the summer of '58 - '59.)the uniform depicted the then RNZAF summer uniform.

The first a poor photograph but this 27 Feb 1958, reveals the Mustangs awaiting disposal at WB. An expert photoshopper unable to improve this.
A close up.

Not Whenuapai but Nadi, there was a TEAL crew on stopover who observed the Valiant land and taxi to the site of the old terminal. They vaulted the fence and introduced themselves as ex RNZAF to the RAF crew who were refuelling. The RAF crew did admit they'd been atmospheric sampling and surprisingly allowed the TEAL crew to enter the aircraft but first covering a large circular instrument on the copilot's panel. OK off thread, again the date uncertain but later than the British tests at Christmas Island.

The uniform of the 'inspector' and the open country beyond gives clues as to what airfield this is.

Paya Lebar, international operations commenced there officially in 1955, transferred to RSAF in 1980 when Changi commenced operations. From 1981 solely for military use.(In the late 60's remnants of the aerodrome it replaced, Kallang, could be sighted close to the S coast of Singapore.) My end to minor thread hijack.

Kaitak Airport in 1966
I suspect the photograph captioned as above (Kaitak in 1966) is actually Paya Lebar. (Singapore) would appreciate another opinion.

With the requirement for the P 8s to operate off OH operationally the assumption is the WP runway either doesn't have adequate pavement spec or the runway length short. So my query is whether the B757 has similar performance restrictions off WP ?

May be pertinent to recall that with engine failure in most (all? ) light twins 50 % of power is lost but performance loss may exceed 70%.

Yes I was sent these photos of 2539 at Bennetts but I don't know the original owner of them. I would be happy to acknowledge that person if we find out their name. Roger Dalziell - AKA "Avenger."
