What? On an aviation forum? Even though he may have been here when Richard Pearse flew, the poor ol' bugger couldn't fly himself!!!!
Seriously though, may there be many to follow on from him in the wonderful programme to bring kakapo back from the very brink.

I was there that day in 1954 too - no wonder I can't remember more about it; I was only five years old.
Why does the aircraft type "Panther" come to mind - did they come here about the same time or was that earlier? I recall they were straight-winged.
Interestingly enough, Wikipedia only rates the Cougar as capable of Mach 0.86. Are we both confused A15? Was it perhaps early Super Sabres?
I do recall that it was anticipated - in fact, announced publicly - that the barrier would be broken if conditions permitted, and I was thus taken in to town by parents for the event. We were somewhere on Queen's Wharf near where Helipro are now, and as I recall the a/c doing the transonic was not in all that steep a dive.

My memory tells me CMX was yellow. Got a feeling I've seen a shot of her on here somewhere but can't locate one.
I never saw CGV but from her date of w/o as 1971 I'd expect she was yellow too.

Sad to report that today's Dominon Post carries the death notice of Derek Erskine.
I'll collect more info to post but recall that Derek was a Canadian -trained WW2 pilot who later became an early topdressing pioneer and flew for many years until he lost his medical.
His name will be well known to many, especially KiwiBeaver who has some great old shots of Derek's.
Funeral tomorrow 1000hrs, Upper Hutt Baptist Church.

Well, well - the Harry Stunell who wrote the letter emigrated to New Zealand with his wife and young son about 1963 and became very close friends of my parents. The Stunells moved from Upper Hutt to Featherston then Palmerston North, where Win became ill and passed away in early 1967. Following this, Harry and his son David returned to the UK but he continued to write to Mum up until her passing in 2001.
During his time here, Harry put a lot of work into a plan for the little town of Rata in the Manawatu to become a retirement town for WW2Air Force vets after the dairy factory closed down, but nothing came of this. He was involved with one Frickleton VC in this scheme.
Google Harry Stunell - there's a nice tale on there and typical of the Harry I remember so well.

That's interesting that there are 4 at Woodbourne - anyone know what condition they are in?
The reason I ask is that I recently scored a RH seat ride to Woodbourne in C208 MYH, and as we were taxiing in at WB there came a call to the Tower: "Strikemaster 66 radio check", to the surprise of both the pilot and myself.

I've always been surprised that those IO720s out of CIA haven't found a home in Fletchers.

I saw dm on JQ262 this morning. He must have had a snooze somewhere 'cos he looked pretty slick and BTW his cabin announcements were the best I've heard in years - in fact, since PanAm days - but I guess he could do that in his sleep............

Hey thanks Dave - good call!
Just look how many replies and views have gone over to it - incredible!
I think it will be very well-used.
Many thanks again, on behalf of all Ag-nutters!

To each, his own Dave......perhaps you should have an "Ag Aviation" thread? ;D I'm finding these types of threads incredible to be honest - I've been around a while but I've seen some amazing stuff on threads like this, Fletchers, Agwagons etc. I'm wondering now how it should be preserved, because it sure should. As an aside, I could find an AHSNZ Journal or two from the mid-60s in which the credits for Aircraft Movements and Airfield Reports would include Dakman, Agavwhiz and me so there's at least 150 years of watching dung-dusters between the three of us! Great forum!

Dakman,
Is that the strip above the limeworks out by Taueru?

Note the shots of CVD and CWU are the same strip. Those cute pink fire-resistant overalls are also sitting on the wing of the first CWW shot!
Any clues as to the drivers? I'll vote for Graeme Leach in the pink.
Are you watching Leachy?
