Thought i would start a whole new thread for Josephine seem we have been discussing the Corsair on the Te Papa tiger moth thread. I see in peter lewis first photo you can see the damage on the tail were a truck was backed into her. Here is two lovely colour photos of her at PAC.

Hi all- quick technical question. The colour scheme of the above Corsair (which is a FG-1 I believe?) Non Specular Sea Blue upper/ Non Spec White? OR Blue Sea Grey"Pacific Blue"/White? I gather this depicts the aircraft after return to New Zealand? Any comments, it seems that RNZAF F4U's are easy enough when they arrived in Standard USN 4 tone colours, but re-paints can be a headache I have seen a wide variety of paint schemes on RNZAF F4Us after they supposedly have been through maintenance. I can understand repaints after arriving back in New Zealand, but surely in the PTO the SU's they would have ready access to USN stock to repaint aircraft. I don't recall the TBF-1c's being in anything other than the USN 4 tones (SBD-5's also). Are these various F4U repaints "artistic license" or am I barking up the wrong tree? Thanks Alan

It will be very interesting to see what else pops up, seeing Mike's poster-sized copies of the first two photos was great. It really looks like they were only taken last week. Superb!

Ah, Josephine! When I first started work with Aero Engine Services Ltd in 1967, I parked my motorbike and ate my lunch under her wings on many a hot sunny day. I was also guilty of poaching a few parts for use on the new AESL engine test truck that was under completion at the time. I just want to remind readers here that the location is more correctly AESL than PAC, as back then, even the NZAIL hangar had not been contemplated and the office block had not grown to two levels. If we captioned "present-day PAC" I guess that would be OK. OJ

Great photos guys.
Is it me or do the blades in that hub in the last photo look like Mustang ones? They certainly dont look like Corsair blades to me.
I guess it doesnt really matter, but great photos indeed!
Cheers Anthony

Which of course raises an interesting question:
The c/n of NZ5648 is given as 3305 ex Bu92044 (as per adfserials) The c/n of ZK-COR is given as 32823 (as per CAA website)
So are they still the same airframe?

Some wonderful photos in this thread chaps. I agree that Mike's posters from the first two photos were just awesome. They had much more colour and life to them than the versions above by the way.

AFAIK Corsairs had 4-digit c/ns When NZ5648 was tidied up for the airport opening in '66 why was she not given her correct serial no? Anybody know ?

I gather this depicts the aircraft after return to New Zealand? Nope - this is the plane before it left NZ, after it was spruced up for the Hamilton airport opening. Didn't it actually get airborne for a bit, like the Ki43 at Wanaka.. ? Great seeing those colour shots - all mine are like Shortys first one, only black and white! Used to play fighter pilots in this one when it was at MOTAT - that's when I learned Corsairs don't have cockpit floors.

If anyone knows it would be Jack Bish as it was his project. Was he perhaps a Corsair pilot and had flown NZ 5611?

Joe Baugher's list of US Navy and Marine Corps Bureau Numbers home.att.net/~jbaugher/thirdseries9.html states that BuNo.88391 is actually correct for Corsair c/n 3205/NZ5648. Mr Baugher goes on to state that the a/c was registered in the UK as G-BXUL and painted in USN colours with the false BuNo. 92844 applied. 92844 was allocated to an FG-1D the contract for which was cancelled, the no. was then allocated to a Ryan Fireball, also cancelled. .

Sorry Nev. I don't know the answer to your question but was it Frank Bish that you were referring to. He was with Motat at the time. Don't know if he was a pilot or not but believe he has passed on to the great aerodrome in the sky.
