What's your name?Peter Lewis Where are you from?Auckland What is your main interest in aviation? Is it historic? Airlines? Military...Mainly NZ Civil, particulary early/prewar. Also vintage de Havilland aircraft. Tell us about your background in aviation. Earliest memories are swinging on the garden gate at Devonport watching the TEAL flying boats landing in the harbour. (That dates me!) Later on, I joined the ATC and experienced flights in B170, Hastings, Devon, Sunderland, Vampire trainer and Harvards. After my marriage broke up about twelve years ago, I got my act together and signed up at the Waitemata Aero Club for my PPL. Since then, have gone onto night, formation and CSU/retractable ratings. Currently working on an aerobatic rating. Do you belong to any aviation groups, like the NZ Warbirds, RNZAF Association, Royal Aeronautical Society or CAF, etc?Member of Aviation Historical Society of NZ (since 1963), was one of the three guys from AHSNZ that prodded the Government into retaining and preserving the C47 NZ3551 and thus establishing the RNZAF Museum. Vintage Aero Club, Auckland AC and WASC at Whenuapai. Was a committee member of AHSNZ in the past, now run their website ahsnz.tripod.com/Involved a bit with the book publishing efforts of Richard Waugh/Peter Layne/Graeme McConnell and run their website www.nzairlineresearch.co.nz/Did a lot of research on the A6M3 Zero for the Auckland Museum back in the 1980s, and have a website for that at Have created and maintain an aircraft database listing details of every officially registered civil (8818) and military (3006) aircraft in NZ. Collection of about 4500 photos of NZ aircraft which I am now trying to get into some sort of indexed order. Done a fair bit of travel around Asia, and visited aviation museums in Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Cambodia, Brunei (fooling -there isn't one in Brunei), Australia (including Tasmania last Christmas), Hong Kong and Shanghai. Are you an aircraft modeller? (Scale or R/C) Nope What are your favourite aviation books?Janic Geelen's first installment of his de Havilland trilogy is superb. 'West with the Night' (Beryl Markham) is an absolute classic. For a good view of flying in NZ in the early days, try 'Flying by Bradshaw' What are your favourite aviation films or TV programmes?Out of Africa . . .ah that Moth! TV? Whats that? Don't think I've got the time . . . Do you frequent other aviation forums?Couple of newsgroups on private flying, aerobatics, restoration. Have you any comments or suggestions for this forum, to hopefully improve your own personal usage and enjoyment on the forum? As long as it doesnt descend into infighting and can maintain the interest level, should be OK

I actually helped a relative fibreglass a KR2 taildragger, and paint it white and orange, when I was 15/16 years old. I used to make surfboards, and my skills were honed on that plane... I never flew in it, for some reason...he has since sold it.

What's your name? Kirsten McKenzie Where are you from? Auckland How old are you? 31 What is your main interest in aviation? Is it historic? Airlines? Military... Military, and the interaction of Air Training Corps Cadets with the NZ Military. Tell us about your background in aviation. Are you just an enthusiast or have you got more hands on experience? Are you a pilot? Do you have an Air Force Background? Or a civil aviation background? Joined the Air Training Corps (No. 3 SQN) in 1989, left to go to No. 40 SQN in about 1994. Did my OE to the UK in 1996 and joined a UK ATC Unit whilst I was there. Came back to NZ, but not to ATC, and then in 2003 I rejoined No. 3 SQN ATC and became a commissioned officer - I wanted to give back as much as I had got out of ATC as a cadet. My husband (an ex ATC Cadet), is currently setting up his own Aviation business - www.avgas.org which is going to keep us busy over the coming months as it gets off the ground. Do you belong to any aviation groups, like the NZ Warbirds, RNZAF Association, Royal Aeronautical Society or CAF, etc? Unfortunately no. Although we do have an annual membership to MOTAT - primarily for the Aviation side of things - I would encourage everyone to buy an annual membership - for the value you get it is incredibly cheap - around $60. Are you an aircraft modeller? (Scale or R/C) Not anymore. What are your favourite aviation books? Any sort of military pilot biography. What are your favourite aviation films or TV programmes? Given my age and background, please forgive me for saying that Top Gun is my favourite "modern" film, followed by Battle of Britain for "classic" film. Do you frequent other aviation forums? Only forums dedicated to Air Training Corps, both here and overseas. Some good training ideas are generated in such forums. Have you any comments or suggestions for this forum, to hopefully improve your own personal usage and enjoyment on the forum? Perhaps Dave you could contact Cadet Forces in Wellington and ask to be linked to the new and improved Cadet Forces Website - www.cadetforces.mil.nz

Welcome Kirsten, it's nice to have you here.
Good luck to you and your husband's new venture. Will he also be joining the forum?
I didn't know people could still join a Motat society as such - what do you get in return for the money out of interest? Maybe you could start a thread on this to promote the cause.
Thanks for the tip re the website, I'll send them an email.

The rank goes up the more you post. They are based on RNZAF ranks. Just a bit of fun really.

If you like someone's post you can click Exalt below their name and it gives them a Karma point. Or alternately if you dislike a post, click Smit and it detracts a point. A bit childish really
