Was offered a ride in a dusting run in one of these up Gisborne way when was a young fella. It was a FieldAir machine.
Awesome don't really cover it this fella was a frustrated fighter pilot man he could through that thing around. I discovered why i had to where helmut...

What has happened the the forum's multitudes of topdressing fans that used to be around here? I thought people would have been pretty excited by the Les Marshall interview episodes but sadly, not a peep. Puzzling.

Oh yes, I've been listening. I've known Les since the early fifties. Like many pilots he married a Wanganui girl and being the small world that it is, I worked with his father-in-law. Les is a great story teller and had a great influence into Janic Geelen putting "The Topdressers" together.

I listened to both parts last night,some great stories,the first ride I had in a fletcher Les was the pilot a bloody nice guy.

Just listened to both episodes. Well done Dave. Some great tales. I am 2 years younger than Les, but can still remember the Meteor. The Avenger drogue incident reminded me of the times they tried to land at Ardmore with the drogue (or just the wire) still attached. The power went off quite regularly by the wire connecting with power wires. Nearly always just at milking time. Interesting talking about Ken Fenwick. His manual was used at the Auckland Aero Club when I started learning in 1963. When I was loading the DC3 we had a Fiat 500. The mini came later. We never tied the Fiat down. It shifted a couple of times, but nothing serious. When we first got the Fiat we used timber planks with saw horses for to support the middle of the planks. They were a bit slippery and on several occasions nearly had a mishap. The ones Les talks about came later. I remember a story told by Jack Humphries about a 44 gal drum of engine oil tipping over in turbulence. It had an old mollasis tap on it which came open and the oil slopped around the belly of the aircraft. Stopped the corrosion for some time.
