Paul, I must agree with your comment about Murray. I knew him at Linwood High School. He was the ATC Cadet Under Officer and I was the Flight Sergeant. He was always helpful and encouraging. We met a few times during our service careers at various bases as we moved around. Always a gentleman.

RIP New Zealand's oldest ever man, and the RNZAF's oldest ever veteran, Ron Hermanns. 109 is an amazing innings. I had the pleasure of meeting him a decade ago.

Here is Ron's death notice.
HERMANNS, Ronald (Ron):
Ron died peacefully at his home on August 30, 2021. He was 109 and New Zealand's oldest person. He did not marry but leaves a niece, Joy Windelev, and a nephew, John Fickling. He was a gifted man. He had the rare combination of high intelligence and manual dexterity. He spent his life problem solving, thinking of new ways of doing things, and continued to do this until the last few days of his life. He served in the Pacific as an aircraft engineer in WW2, and created 'trench art' in his spare time. These items are on display at the Air Force Museum of New Zealand at Wigram. After the war he became a Senior Instructor at the Aircraft Engineering Workshops at Christchurch Airport, initially for NAC, and then for Air New Zealand. He retired in 1976. In recent years he has been able to live independently at home with the help of his friends. These were the late Joy Monteath for many years, and then her husband Mike Beard, Robbie Georgieff, Katherine Ryan, and Pauline Gibson. Over the last few months Judy Fanning and Lynn Williams have given Ron essential and expert support, assisted latterly by Nurse Maude. A celebration of his life will take place at a later date.
