You are talking out of a hole in your head. He was there during the war. I have seen his medals. He also met his wife there. So yes kindly take a hike. Whilst you are clearly upset at the loss of what I can only imagine is your relative, Ian Bond, your approach with this aggressive post is not the best way to start out with your first and only post on this forum. Especially not on this thread that is all about respectively remembering our Air Force and aviation veterans and heroes who've passed away. Here we treat each other with respect and we debate rather than argue. You probably have no idea but Errol is one of the foremost historians and researchers of RNZAF history, he has a wealth of knowledge and resources at his fingertips, and as you'll see he has produced evidence from RNZAF Routine Orders dated 8th of April 1942 showing an Ian Stephen Balfour Bond, birth date 11/7/1917, as enlisting on the 27th of March 1942 in the trade classification of Aircraft Hand (General Duties). From 1941 onwards No. 46 Squadron RAF was operating in the Malta, Egypt and Cyprus areas, and were nowhere near RAF Digby. From January 1945 the squadron was back in England at RAF Stoney Cross, flying Stirlings for Transport Command, on a route to India and back. I believe somewhere along the way an error has crept in regarding Digby, but no-one is saying he was not a member of the squadron nor that he was not in England. If he was an aircrew trade he'd have had a Flying Logbook which would map out all his movements and bases. Perhaps if you can please offer information rather than anger, we may all learn something about Ian Bond.

His funeral will be on Saturday but details are not yet available. RIP From Colin Hanson’s By Such Deeds – Honours and awards in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, 1923 – 1999: DAVIES, Flight Lieutenant George Stanley, DFC. NZ427262 & 132021; Dunedin, 4 Apr 1923; NZ Army (3 Bn Otago Regt) 22 May 1942 to 7 Jul 1942, 3/2B/768; RNZAF 11 Jul 1942 to 16 Jan 1946, Res. to 5 Apr 1978; PoW 14 Feb to 28 Apr 1945; Pilot. Citation Distinguished Flying Cross (12 Jan 1946 to date from 12 Jan 1945): [75(NZ)Sqn RAF (Lancaster)] Acting Flight Lieutenant Davies, as pilot, has completed numerous operations against the enemy in the course of which he has invariably displayed the utmost fortitude, courage and devotion to duty.
At 2032 hours on the night of 14 Feb 1945 Flt Lt Davies’ Lancaster took off from RAF Mepal for a raid on Chemnitz, Germany. His aircraft was shot down and he was captured the same night at Karlsruhe. On 2 Mar Flt Lt Davies and members of his crew, along with a number of RAF and USAAF prisoners of war were travelling by train to Nuremberg. The train consisted of a locomotive, passenger carriages, some goods wagons, a flak wagon and then, at the rear, three unmarked box wagons full of prisoners of war. As an Allied fighter aircraft shot-up the locomotive the flak wagon opened fire on it and a second fighter then ‘took out’ the flak wagon. Unfortunately the cone of fire from this second aircraft covered the box wagons and some 25 RAF and USAAF aircrew were killed. F/S H E Chalmers, RAF (1565986), Flt Lt Davies’ bomb aimer, was in one of the front box wagons and was killed. Flt Lt Davies and his navigator, F/S C C Greenough, RNZAF who were in the rear wagon were unscathed. During his confinement Flt Lt Davies was moved to several Prisoner of War camps and at one stage was force marched from Nuremberg to Moosburg. In Jul 1993, he recalled that at Nuremberg their total daily rations consisted of 1 slice of bread, 1 cup of thin soup and 1 cup of ersatz coffee. Liberated by United States Army units 28 Apr 1945.
