Yes I heard this sad news. Another of the well known Vampire pilots gone. He was one of the famous Jetobatic team members. I met him once when he was a guide at the RNZAF Museum, a very nice chap.

In addition he has held a variety of staff appointments including Director of Operations RNZAF. Since 1979 he has held the appointment of Officer Commanding RNZAF Base Wigram, and as occasion demanded has acted for Air Officer Commanding RNZAF Support Group. Throughout his appointment Group Captain Rudd has shown superior qualities of leadership, dedication and commitment to the Service and to the personnel under his command. Under his guidance, improvements to the training practices, styles and patterns of the air training schools located at Wigram have been introduced. Under his command the introduction to service of F27 navigation training aircraft has been smoothly achieved and its potential exploited to maximum benefit in the operational and training tasks to which it is assigned. He has supervised the completion of a Base Development Plan designed to provide a long term Works programme which will improve working and living conditions at RNZAF Base Wigram in the most efficient and economical way. A recent and lasting example of his concern for the welfare of his subordinates and their families was the construction of a Community Centre on Base Wigram, designed to encourage involvement in sport and other community activities. The raising of the $230,000 of non-public money and the design and construction of this building were all completed successfully under his energetic and inspiring leadership. In all the many and varied flying, staff and command appointments which he has filled, Group Captain Rudd has made an exceptional contribution to the Service. GPCAPT Colin Rudd OBE, AFC, RNZAF (Retd).GPCAPT RNZAF A75049 passed away on Tuesday 01 Nov.
Lower Hutt-born Colin Rudd began his RNZAF initial training at Taieri in May 1952 on No. 11 Aircrew Course, where he completed 12 hours in a Tiger Moth. He then moved to Wigram as part of No. 11 Pilots Course for basic and advanced flying instruction on Harvards. As a qualified pilot, Rudd opted for jet aircraft and went on to fly the Vampire with No. 14 and No. 75 Squadrons, including a tour in Malaya.
He joined No. 75 Squadron’s Vampire aerobatic team in 1956 which thrilled crowds around the country and, along with three other aircraft, put on an impressive farewell display at the RNZAF’s 21st Anniversary air show at Ohakea in 1958. Shortly afterwards, the team reformed for a demonstration of precision formation flying for the film ‘Jetobatics’ made by the National Film Unit. Like his team-mates, Rudd loved the challenge presented by flying aerobatics. In 1960 he was awarded a Queen’s Commendation for Valuable Service in the Air for his role with the ‘Jetobatics’ team.
After being a flying instructor, Rudd became Commanding Officer of No. 75 Squadron at Ohakea in 1966, which also involved again leading the Vampire aerobatic team of which he had been a member years before. He later served as Base Commander at Wigram until he left the RNZAF in 1984 and settled in Christchurch.
Colin was one of the RNZAF Museum volunteers for twenty years as a guide and later in the Black Hand Gang ( T echnical t eam) until his retirement due to ill health last year .
Colin's funeral is confirmed for 1730, Monday 7th November in the Atrium at the Air Force Museum.
Letters of condolence may be sent to the Rudd family, 2 Coppinger Terrace, Halswell, Christchurch

Two ex-No. 75 Squadron commanders in the space of a week or so. Very sad. It is fitting that his funeral will be held at the Atrium of the Air Force Museum of New Zealand, he gave so much of his life to the Air force.

Member of the ‘Caterpillar Club’; during his training, on 10 Feb 1953, he baled out after his Harvard collided with that of fellow pupil Actg Plt Off F M Kinvig (qv). Now there is a story (so I am told)! Apparently, there was enough time for the two to get the story straight, before the boffins arrived. Note it was Fred's first, of two, silk let-downs. Farewell, Curl, you were a good boss.

Yes. I remember Ken Germon as the Admin Officer when I was at Sprog School in 1973. Was the RNZAF's bionic man after his parachuting accident, and was full of pins and plates. Great spirit and a heck of a nice guy

Max Clear It with great regret that I pass on this information of the Passing of Max Clear this Saturday. He has and will always be a great inspiration to the aviation community and we will miss him dearly.
Detail of his service below:
Our old flying chum left us on Saturday morning. November 12th, 2011.
Max was at home with his family around him.
The Service will be at Te Kowhai airfield at 14.00 hrs on Wednesday 16th.
I have been asked to request that, if you intend to fly in to farewell Max, you plan to arrive by about 13.00 hrs and please do not fly during the Service.
Max did recently get to do some things that he really wanted to achieve before it was too late. He got on to the footplate of the Ab steam locomotive pulling the Kingston Flyer and visited Mandeville whilst down south.
Max told me recently that he was keen to organise a pre-Christmas gathering of old friends at Te Kowhai.......so it will be; and he will be there with us..........
