Ray Deerness has sent me this notice he received about longtime AHSNZ member Jack Browne: Sadly we have to advise you our beloved father and your friend Jack Browne passed away yesterday at 3:10 He had suffered somewhat to the ongoing rigors of age exacerbated in very recent months by other factors. He spent a week in Tauranga Hospital in late November and appeared to be discharged prematurely, having to be re-admitted to spend Christmas and his 91st birthday in hospital where most of the extended family got to spend time with him whilst there. We moved him to Carter House Rest Home hospital wing in Te Puke 29 December where care was attentive, warm and caring. He enjoyed a full day on New Year’s Day with family and friends. He succumbed to a peaceful end 6 days later. The funeral service is to be: Saturday 7 January 2017 at 14:00 at Classic Flyers Museum 8 Jean Batten Drive Mount Maunganui 3116 New Zealand It would be a pleasure to see you there if you can make it. Jack had a well attended funeral in the Classic Flyers Museum. Those gathered included a good representation of the Tauranga area aviation community. He was held in high regard by many and this was shown by the hearse with his casket being given special dispensation to depart with a drive along the taxiway and beyond following the route that Jack drove children attending birthday parties hosted by Classic Flyers. The last time he did so was just on a month ago. The grand finale was an impressive display by Andrew Gormlie in Harvard NZ1096 and Derek Williams in Harvard NZ1091. RIP Jack.

John Morris was one of three members of the family of five who served in the wartime RNZAF. His older half-brother Trevor was a Defiant air gunner early in the war, then later retrained as a pilot. And John's sister Margaret was a WAAF driver, based at Whenuapai. Their other sister Grace was married to a P-40 and Corsair pilot, Graeme Ronayne. Quite a contribution from that Cambridge family.

Born Cambridge. RNZAF 1 Jul 1923. Pilot. Shot down, baled out on the night of 28-29 Jul 1944 with 75(NZ)Sqn RAF (Lancaster) during a raid on Stuttgart. The aircraft crashed at Tevres, Eure-et-Loir. Shortly after crossing the Rhine on their outbound journey their aircraft was shot-up, the rear gunner was killed and one engine put out of action. The bomb load was jettisoned and a course set for base. Half way back across France, with the aircraft losing height, the captain, Flt Lt N A D Stokes, ordered the surviving crew members to bale out. Flt Lt Stokes went down with his aircraft. Fg Off Morris along with M K Drummond, G H Sanders, N T Sampson and W G Raynel, all evaded capture and returned to their squadron. On 3 Feb 1945 Fg Off Morris was again shot down, this time with 15 Sqn RAF (Lancaster) during a raid on the Hanza benzol plant at Dortmund, crashing near Munchen Gladbach. PoW. Safe UK 11 May 1945. On return to NZ Flt Lt Morris joined the NZ Army as a Lieutenant (455929) and served in Japan with 'J' Force. Later Colonel J M Morris, MBE, NZ Army. ------------------------ Christchruch writer Glyn Strange's bilingual booklet No Glory without Effort/Pas de Glorie Sans Effort (Clerestory Press, 2004) details the loss of Stoke's 75 Sqn Lancaster on the night of 28/29 July 44.
