Sad news, I was just informed tonight by my sister Shelley that Bill Edhouse has passed away. Bill was the grandfather of Shelley's husband Steve Edhouse. During WWII William John Edhouse, NZ426311, trained as an Air Gunner and he served on Hawker Hinds with No. 6 (AC) Squadron at Milson, No. 21 (AC) Squadron at Ohakea and No. 20 Squadron at Onerahi.
He then did a course with No. 30 Squadron and No. 2 Gunnery School, both at Gisborne, to get to grips with turrets before being posted to No. 1 (GR) Squadron at Whenuapai. He went on that squadron's first Pacific tour based at Henderson Field, Guadalcanal before returning to Whenuapai. He was then posted to No. 9 (BR) Squadron at Piva, Bougainville. Then he returned to Whenuapai and was posted to No. 8 (BR) Squadron there, before finally being posted back to No. 6 Squadron which was now flying Catalinas. I am pretty certain Bill was the last of No. 6 Squadron's original members from the Hind days. He has died following a short illness in New Plymouth. He was a really great bloke and a proper character. RIP Bill.

Yes, that Buka Passage mining operation was a bit of a fiasco, and was quite a large scale joint effort by US Navy and RNZAF. However finding anything substantial about it seems to be all but impossible. I have seen quite a few official reports of aerial minelaying in the South Pacific theatre, mostly utilising Catalinas and Avengers, but none even hint at this operation, which is very strange as it was possibly the largest single operation of it type ever undertaken south of the equator. The only thing that seems certain is that no Allied aircraft were lost, and that the Japanese seem to have lost no ships of any kind. Very few mines were actually "laid". As Bill E states, there was no training of any kind for this operation, and it seems to have been planned at very short notice, with all squadrons available, at night in foul weather, based on some hasty guestimates by Allied intelligence about possible Japanese shipping movements at a critical time. Needless to say, it is much easier to locate information about successful operations - success has many fathers, but failure is always an orphan. David D
