The following article was published in today's print edition of the Wairarapa Times-Age, although they haven't put it online. Pioneer aerobatics ace diesBy DON FARMER | Tuesday, 07 November 2017A FEARLESS WOMAN PILOT who cut her teeth in aerobatics while living in rural Greytown has died in Hawke's Bay. Gay Skerman, 80, was regarded as a trailblazing woman flyer who had nerves of steel and a great love of being airborne. She carried on flying well into her senior years even as a grandmother of 12. Interviewed by Philippa Novak in 2004, Mrs Skerman said flying was in her blood and kept her “excited and mentally on the ball”. She appeared in the television series, ‘ A Flying Visit’ hosted by fellow-flyer and television weatherman Jim Hickey and in 1991 took part in the Round New Zealand Air Race. Her husband Jim, who survives her, also held a pilot's licence and the couple built an airstrip on the 80-hectare property between Greytown and Tauherenikau. When she first tried aerobatics, Mrs Skerman said she “took to it like a duck to water”. So much so, her husband gave her a subscription for membership of the New Zealand Aerobatic Club as a special Christmas present. She relished flying upside down, which is not every flyer's cup of tea, saying she would be happy to fly upside down all day long. Mrs Skerman was also a member of the Airwoman's Association and the American-based ‘Ninetynines’ an exclusie flying group founded in the 1930s by Amelia Earhart. A funeral service for Mrs Skerman was held in Havelock North yesterday.
