T41808; Born Masterton, 14 Aug 1945; NZ Army 14 Jul 1965 to 24 Mar 1977; RNZAF 24 Mar 1977 to ~; Bandmaster. Chief of Air Staff Commendation (1982): For outstanding zeal and devotion to duty.New Zealand 1990 Commemoration Medal (1990): In recognition of Services made to the Brass Band Movement in New Zealand.Citation New Zealand Meritorious Service Medal (16 Oct 1997): F/S Everitt joined the New Zealand Army in 1965 and quickly established himself as a leading bandsman. Between 1965 and 1967 F/S Everitt served with 1 RNZIR Band in Malaya and saw active service in Borneo in 1966. Between 1969 and 1971 F/S Everitt served with 1 RNZIR Band in Singapore and as a member of the Regiment Dance Band, Kiwi 5, drew high praise carrying out 170 performances by the group during his tour. From 1974 to 1976 he served in Singapore with the 2/1 RNZIR Band featuring as a soloist on many occasions. In March 1977 F/S Everitt joined the RNZAF. In addition to his duties as a service bandsman, F/S Everitt was selected for the National Band of New Zealand, touring the United States in 1980 and 1995 and Europe in 1985. In 1981 F/S Everitt also performed as a member of the Royal fanfare on State occasions. In 1990 he was appointed Drum Major of the National Band and led the Band at the Commonwealth Games in Auckland. F/S Everitt’s energies and enthusiasm for music are unbounded. In his own time he plays a significant part in community bands and as a member of the Wanganui Band has taken part in the Australian National Band competition and Drum Majored the band at the 1993 Edinburgh Tattoo. In 1996 he was made a Life member of the Wanganui City Brass Band. F/S Everitt brings skill, dedication and enthusiasm to service and community bands alike. The professionalism with which he approaches his duties is illustrated in the results he has achieved with the RNZAF Base Ohakea Band. In 1995 the band won the inter-base band competition for the thirteenth consecutive year. Under his encouragement, leadership and direction the band is not only fully manned by enthusiastic and capable regular and territorial personnel but it undertakes a full programme both on Base and in the local community. During his 32 years of service, F/S Everitt has provided outstanding commitment and service to military and community bands throughout New Zealand. Indeed, today he is still the reigning champion Drum Major in New Zealand! He has been an excellent representative and ambassador for the RNZAF. Husband of Sgt C N Everitt. EVERITT, Sergeant Christine Nancy, BEM.D84804; Born Hunterville, 15 May 1946; RNZAF 28 Oct 1970 to 22 Feb 1974 & 8 Jun 1976 to 18 Dec 1988; TAF 20 Jan 1989 to ~; Senior Clerk Typist, then TAF Musician. Citation British Empire Medal (NY1987): Sergeant Everitt enlisted in the WRNZAF in 1970. Following training as a typist, she served on RNZAF Bases Woodbourne and Wigram until she was released from the WRNZAF in 1974 to accompany her husband on a posting to Singapore. During her period overseas however, she retained her connection with Defence as she was employed at Headquarters New Zealand Force South East Asia as a confidential typist. On her return to New Zealand in 1976, she enlisted in the RNZAF. She was promoted to Corporal in 1979 and Sergeant in 1982. Sergeant Everitt is an exceptionally capable shorthand typist and throughout her Service career has consistently produced work to a superior standard. Because of her ability, her services are in great demand particularly at Summaries of Evidence, Courts of Inquiry and the like. Since her posting to Ohakea in 1977 she has, for example, been involved in no fewer that ten Formal Investigations and three Courts martial. Work of this nature often requires disruption to normal routine at short notice but Sergeant Everitt has willingly given her good-natured support and has worked lengthy periods in excess of normal duty hours without complaint. Sergeant Everitt was appointed Co-opted Trade Test Examiner for the Clerk Typist trade on 22 February 1983, an appointment which she still holds. Since her enlistment in the service, Sergeant Everitt has been closely associated with both Base and civilian bands. She is a very accomplished Flugel Horn player and has twice won the national solo championships with this instrument. For the past nine years, Sergeant Everitt has given the Ohakea Base Band her total support and has worked many out-of-duty hours attending the weekly practices and performances. In contrast to the majority of Base Bandsmen, who are Territorial servicemen and receive remuneration, Sergeant Everitt gives her time to the band without recompense and with little compensatory stand-down from her normal demanding duties. She is often also called upon to perform as a soloist at Quarter-guards, commemorative parades and funerals. In spite of these demands she still finds time to play in a local civilian ‘A’ grade band and, in 1985, was selected as a member of the National Band of New Zealand for its tour of Europe. For many years, Sergeant Everitt has consistently contributed much more to the RNZAF than could normally be expected. She has willingly given of her own time to the extra demands placed on her in connection with her trade and as a voluntary bandswoman. Wife of F/S J C Everitt. Errol

Forum member OJ just rang to say he attended the funeral this morning of Robert Fulton "Peter" Cunningham, who OJ knew when Peter Cunningham worked at Pacific Aerospace and Aeromotive. OJ discovered at the funeral that Peter had supposedly joined the RNZAF in 1942 and had trained as a pilot but did not see any action because the war ended just as he gained his wings. Furthermore OJ said that Peter had spent many years farming at Kaipaki, as had his parents. Kaipaki is in the Cambridge district and so Peter Cunningham should be on the Wings Over Cambridge website. Does anyone here know anything about him please?
CUNNINGHAM, Robert (Peter): Passed away on 25th October 2018 at Waikato Hospital, late of Hilda Ross Retirement Home. Dearly loved husband of Wendy, and the late Verna. Loving father of Chris & Jan. Loved grandfather of 5 & great-grandfather of 2. Loved by all his family. A service for Peter will be held at Seddon Park Funeral Home Chapel, Cnr Seddon Road & Somerset Street, Hamilton, on Monday, 29 October 2018 at 10.30am, followed by private cremation. All communications to the Cunningham family C/- PO Box 5523, Frankton, Hamilton 3242.

Thanks Errol. OJ says he was born on the 25th of Feb 1929, which leads to a real discrepancy as he'd only have been 13 in 1942. Perhaps it was the ATC he'd joined.

Well this is somewhat perplexing. At the funeral today I clearly saw on the photo slides presentation, Peter in RNZAF uniform and also sitting in a Moth in flying regalia.
I was wrong about the flying training date; the Reverend Bob Short who conducted the service, said 1942 in error (I just phoned him).
Mr Cunningham was apparently in the last flying training intake before the war finished, so maybe he enlisted in 1945 aged 16?
I will try to get a service number from the family. One of his daughters has his flying log-book. I will ask tomorrow.

Eddie evaded and made it to Switzerland where he worked as a cipher clerk in the British Embassy .In mid 1944 he re entered France and evaded again to eventually cross into Spain. RIP Eddie . From Colin Hanson’s By Such Deeds – Honours and awards in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, 1923 – 1999 : WORSDALE, Pilot Officer Edwin, mid. NZ412919; Born Christchurch, 12 Jan 1922; RNZAF 11 May 1941 to 11 Dec 1945; Wireless Operator-Air Gunner, the ASD. Citation Mention in Despatches (NY1945): In recognition of distinguished service and devotion to duty. At about 0030 hours on the night of 24/25 Oct 1942, Sgt Worsdale’s 75(NZ)Sqn RAF Wellington was shot down in flames over France while returning from an abortive raid on the Milan railway marshalling yards. Due to weather conditions it had not been possible to gain sufficient height to cross the Alps into Italy. The decision was therefore taken to return to base carrying their load of incendiary bombs. While over central France they were attacked by a night fighter and their bomber set on fire. They jettisoned their bomb load and crash-landed in the darkness, only Sgt J G Barnes (qv) managing to bale out beforehand; two members of the crew were killed (including the captain, Sgt H J Hugill, RNZAF). Sgt Worsdale and the RAF rear gunner set off toward the south-east. Eighteen days later, with assistance from French peasants who provided food and shelter, and having covered up to 30 kms a day on foot, they successfully reached the Swiss border, at Damvant, where they surrendered to the Swiss Police and were classified as evaders. During the time spent in Switzerland, Sgt Worsdale worked for nine months as a cipher clerk at the British Consulate in Geneva. Immediately prior to D-Day, he set out from Switzerland for Spain thoroughly briefed and provided with the necessary false documents, train tickets, etc. His train journey from Geneva took him as far as St Bernard, in south-western France. From there he walked to Bagnères de Luchon, crossing the Pyrénées at Bausen completely unassisted. Once in Spain he immediately gave himself up to the Civil Police, being released after a few days into the hands of the British Embassy and returned to England on 11 Jul 1944 via Gibraltar. He arrived back in NZ in September and following commissioning and training in NZ was posted to the South Pacific in 1945 as a cipher officer, serving with 5 Sqn RNZAF (Catalina) at Espiritu Santo and at Funafuti, and at Guadalcanal. I have just checked through a (long) list of postwar-trained RNZAF pilots and other aircrew of my own making (compiled from normally reliable sources), but the first Cunningham to come up was not until 1973! I hasten to point out that this list is known to be not 100% complete, but I am fairly certain that all the early postwar courses (up until mid-1950s) are pretty well complete (from Wigram diary, course photographs, and newspaper lists of graduates, plus cross checking with RNZAF lists). Make of this what you will! However profuse apologies if I have missed his name anywhere in the lists. David D

The family said the last intake of pilot training before the end of the war, so not post-war.
