Smith D DFC LdeH , NZ 41948 in Auckland yesterday. Doug served as a pilot with 88 and 204 squadrons RAF , and as a NAC captain post war. He was fit and well until recently and always enjoyed a yarn and fast cars. His time with 88 squadron was shortened by aerobatics in a Boston while staff officers were visiting. He accumulated over 20,000 hours and amongst his many logbooks , his RAF one gave him great pleasure as it contained two red endorsements neatly balanced by two greens . A very good pilot and a great guy to be with, Doug will be missed by many.

Very sad to lose Doug, he was such a great chap and a real character. But he definitely had a good innings at nearly 101.

From Colin Hanson’s By Such Deeds – Honours and awards in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, 1923 – 1999 : SMITH, Flight Lieutenant Douglas Stanley Pêche, DFC. NZ41948; Born London, England, 11 Mar 1918; RNZAF 9 Feb 1941 to 8 Jul 1947; Pilot. Citation Distinguished Flying Cross (8 Jun 1944): [207 Sqn RAF (Lancaster)] This officer has completed numerous operations against the enemy, in the course of which he has invariably displayed the utmost fortitude, courage and devotion to duty. Prior to service with 207 Sqn, Flt Lt Smith completed seven low level sorties with 88 Sqn RAF (Boston). In May 1993 he recalled that on return from one of these flights he carried out a low level ‘beat-up’ of the Officers Mess at RAF Swanton Morley, which, unfortunately, was witnessed by Viscount Trenchard. His posting to 5 Group and heavy bombers ‘was quite sudden’! Following his tour with 207 Sqn he instructed at 11 OTU RAF (Wellington) and for a year prior to his repatriation to NZ in 1947 he flew Yorks with RAF Transport Command’s 242 Sqn. Errol

I think I am correct in saying that Doug Smith is the first of all the NAC pilots to actually reach the fine old age of 100.
