From NZ Warbirds:
"NZ Warbirds Office 10:23 (13 hours ago) to NZ Good morning Members It is with great sadness and a very heavy heart that we have in the last few days lost one of our hugely valuable NZ Warbirds club members, Judy Costello.
Judy and Edith Robinson flew down for the weekend to Classic Fighters, with Judy as Patroness of the NZ Air Womans Association saluting women in aviation. Judy sadly suffered a sudden heart attack on Friday morning. Judy started flying with Waikato Aero Club in 1958 and obtained her PPL early in 1959. In September 1961 she attended the first commercial pilot’s course to be held at Ardmore aerodrome by the Auckland Aero Club. She obtained her CPL and instructor rating in 1962 and her first commercial job was as an aerial photographer for National Air Photo; after a few months she moved into the pilot’s seat. This was exciting flying as 90% was at low level doing aerial shots of farms over much of the North Island.
In 1962 she moved north to Whangarei to instruct for the Northland Districts Aero Club which also operated each week from Kaikohe and Kaitaia. She obtained her B Cat instructor rating early 1963 and later that year returned to Ardmore to work for the first flying school established in NZ, the Auckland Flying School. At the end of that year she married Ray Costello who had just joined NAC; they were based in Christchurch for six months and Judy instructed part-time with the Canterbury Aero Club.
Returning to the Auckland area in 1964, Judy resumed instructing for Auckland Flying School and Manukau Flying School in between raising four children. She maintained her interest in aviation and in NZAWA, but much of her time was devoted to family, grandchildren, horses and gardening.
In 2007 she and Ray purchased a Tecnam Golf, so flying was still very much a part of their life. (Text from NZAWA). Among her many talents, Judy looked after the rostering for our Volunteers and did a tremendous job.
Judy’s funeral service will be held at NZ Warbirds Hangar 2, Ardmore on Monday 29th April at 2pm. All of Judy’s Warbirds friends and family are invited.
We will all miss Judy hugely and on behalf of Frank Parker our President, the Committee and the whole NZ Warbirds community, we wish to convey our most sincere condolences to Ray and his family."

On Friday (19th) I received an email from Bryan Cox as follows (in part). Below the email is Judy's death notice.
"Hi Peter I have just heard that dear Judy has passed away very unexpectedly at Blenheim this morning from a massive heart attack. She was staying with my second cousin Heather Fulton who phoned me a couple of hours ago.
I am fairly certain that you will know of Judy as she has been in the aviation scene for over 60 years, and I think is patron of the NZ Air Women' Assn now, with the long handled name New Zealand Association of Women In Aviation.
My wife and I were her first passengers on obtaining her PPL in a Piper Cub - I think at Rukuhia or could have been at Mangere Prior to that Judy had done typing for me when I was a Resident Inspector for Royal Exchange Assurance Co, with both us being based with the GM agency of Cooper & Curds, selling Vauxhall and Chevrolet vehicles. No Toyotas then!!! Bryan
COSTELLO, Judith Leonie (Judy). Born 28 December, 1938. Passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on 19 April 2019. Dearly loved wife of 55 years, best mate, farming partner and co-captain of Ray. Loved and treasured Mum and Mum-in-law of Kim, Guy, Peta, Greg, Sean, Debbie, Michael, Macarena and Mel. Adored Nana of Georgia, Ben, Margeaux, Madeleine, Olivia, Will, Jack, Emilia and Mackenzie. Dearly loved sister of Marie and the late Graeme. Loved sister-in-law and aunty. Beautiful memories will live in our hearts forever. A celebration of Judy's life will take place at the Warbirds, hangar 2, Harvard Lane, Ardmore Aerodrome, on Monday 29 April at 2pm. For all communications please contact Peta 0275774444
