Errol or Dave. What do you make of that service number? I think it may wrong like the rank interpretation in the obituary which stated LAC (Leading Air Crew).

trees, A small point, but wartime New Zealand WAAFs did not have an "NZ" prefix, just the "W". The WAAF number series started (I think) at W1001. David D

David D My understanding is during WWII the NZW prefix on a service number stood for NZ Works, for men that were members of the Works Squadrons. Is this correct?

For the breif time I was an apprentice with the RAAF my service number was always NZ82984. When I returned to NZ it reverted to 82984 until they added the letter in front. It then became A82984

Dave H, That is correct. However the "W" was often deleted at a later date, when the works trades were reorganised and trade names changed, moves which rendered the use of the inserted "W" superfluous. For instance there were two types of electricians in the RNZAF from 1942, the ones specifically trained on aircraft systems, and the "domestic" type who worked on buildings, etc. The latter trade was later re-designated as electrician (station) to make his position clear. Aircraft electricians remained as simply electricians. David D

Was the NZW prefix for Works instituted because the initial batch of Works men were among the very few who did not actually volunteer for the RNZAF,and were in fact mobilised from existing government PWD gangs?

Not certain about that Dave, but I did get the impression that it was to do with having (possibly ex PWD) men remaining on the aerodromes, but now under military discipline, and perhaps also for reasons of having willing and dedicated workers (perhaps self-volunteered) who might stick to their jobs should there be any actual bombing. Having said that, in reality, when the bombs are on their way, it is always best to give then a wide berth. I think later in the war, these uniformed works men were released from the service, but I am not really certain about their true status. Maybe they were accommodated in RNZAF barracks, or huts rather than coming in from home every day? Dave D

Michelle Sim may have some answers David, she's made a study of the Aerodrome Construction Squadrons.

The Aerodrome Construction Squadrons were a different kettle of fish, and their terms of engagement were probably different to normal servicemen. They may even have been a class of Territorials. Remember when these two squadrons were formed (mid 1941), there was no actual war in the Pacific, so recruiting for these units was possibly on a different basis, as it was essentially intended for "peacetime" construction work (although no guarantees were given that peace would continue indefinitely!) I have yet to get to the bottom of the terms of service offered to the ACS men. David D

I was very sad to read just now on Facebook that Richard Kinloch ("Paddy" here on the forum) passed away today aged 62, in Australia. Paddy was ex-RNZAF, and I am sure many will recall the fascinating thread he created on the forum that described his stroke in 2015, and his road to recovery and life afterwards. I a not sure of anymore detail on his death, his brother Terry posted the news on Facebook.
