Sad to read of Chris Moller's demise. I worked with him at the Te Rapa Tech Section. he used to use me as ballast when trying out his racing sidecar set up around base roads. Eventually the CO put a stop to the little escapade.

Just received
Snow Clements
It is with much sadness that I have to inform you of the passing of Warrant Officer Snow Clements B77373 SM ASST (Jun 1954 - Aug 1975). Snow served in Malaysia and Vietnam and retired as W/O I/c of AMU. ‘Snow’ slipped away on Saturday the 4th after a prolonged illness. Many will be well aware that Snow had suffered from a number of illnesses and injuries since an accident during a military exercise in Fiji back in 1971. Unfortunately his health started to really deteriorated mid way through last year to the point he required full time medical assistance so he was placed in a convalescence home in Cambridge. He never lost his larger than life character and right to the end he still had the ability to give both the nursing staff and family the benefit of the Clements's and or 'Warrant Officers' wit, stubbornness but balanced with his keen sense of integrity and frankness. True to his wishes he will not have any form of service and as he was a keen gardener his ashes will be spread over one of his sons’ large manicured gardens later this week. Dawn has all the family gathered around her and is coping as best she can as she too does not keep in the best of health. Should you wish to contact her, her address is 129A Queens Street Cambridge, NZ

Yes he's on the lists but wasn't ever included in lists of living survivors as far as I have seen. I thought we'd tracked down all the survivors when we were filming interviews with them. Sad to think we missed one.

The prospect of surviving to such a ripe old age probably seem extremely unlikely then. Newlands is mentioned a number of times in Vol Two of Bloody Shambles. He was a Hurricane pilot with 232 and 242 Sqns, being captured on Java in March 1942. He was liberated from Hakodate Camp, Japan on 12 September 1945. Errol

Wow.
I did a really fantastic interview with Ron Reid who spent the same amount of time as a POW of the Japanese, after he'd flown Vildebeest and Albacore in combat against them, including at Endau on the famous raid. He was not a mere POW, he became the lead striker on a Japanese railway for three and a half years. How he lasted it is a miracle. Ron is still going strong at 95, a remarkable chap. I wish i'd known about Eric Newlands, he could have been an interesting one to record his history from too.

That's sad to hear Jim. I knew he was unwell. He served in No. 489 (NZ) Squadron and then on Corsairs in Japan.
